About this listen

It looked for all the world like a terrible, tragic accident. Susanna Morgan had gotten up in the middle of the night, tripped, fallen, and broken her neck. Yet when detective Justin Westwood inspects the victim's apartment, he can't help noticing that the details don't quite add up. The glass on the bedside table is knocked over but there are no cuts on her body. The scrape on her knee looks suspiciously fresh. And then a terrified witness comes forward, confirming his worst fear.

This is no accident. This is murder.

Justin Westwood moved to East End Harbor to escape a dark, disturbing past, and to lead a quiet life. He had retreated from reality by taking a menial post with a small-town Long Island police department, drowning his troubles in mindless traffic duty and lots of booze. Now his dormant professionalism is awakened after Susanna's brutal murder. This is just the kind of reality check that Justin needs, and he will stop at nothing to get to the bottom of this madness - to find the meaning of the mysterious "Aphrodite" - and maybe save himself in the process.

Fascinating

Any additional comments?

A really fascinating thriller from beginning to end. Had to make sure i was paying attention so I didn't miss any of the details. Scary to think about the collusion of government and "big" science.

Just Works - Wonderfully

Justin Westwood's a cop-of-mystery. Russell Andrews plots like a surgeon... And this operation's a successful procedure. The author's thought about how to make a mystery, mysterious. And he's commercial enough to add the sort of characters that movie goers expect. Hey... why over think... I liked it and Buck Shirner's read's perfect. I'll buy more from both of them.

Intriguing read

What made the experience of listening to Aphrodite the most enjoyable?

I didn't guess most of the "aha" moments - I like that in thriller novels.

What other book might you compare Aphrodite to and why?

Possibly John Grisham books...this isn't a legal thriller, but some of the plot and characters are Grisham-esque.

Have you listened to any of Buck Schirner’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This was my first one, I certainly enjoyed it.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When the hero thought or spoke about his former life. I found these scenes to be pretty powerful.

Great Writer, but couldn't handel the bad language

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I thought the writer was awesome and engaging. The narrator was areally good as well, but I couldn't deal with all the bad language. I guess I will have to stick with Young Adult fiction.

Sleepy Narrator

Decent story but the narrator has an especially deep voice and he reads slow. Made me sleepy. I upped the speed on my iPod and it was a little easier to listen to. That said, if you like this author, this is hardly a reason to avoid the book.

Wonderful surprise!

Didn't expect much of this impulsive purchase, but ended up loving the book and the narrator. Sorry Mr. Schirner, but at first your voice irritated me, then by chapter 3, I fell in love with the way you intoned all the characters. I let myself be enjoyably tossed around by the author, not trying to figure out the conclusion, and I loved all the twists and turns and unexpected revelations. Fun stuff for those of us who love government conspiracy theories.

A sequel is in order - fascinating possibilities

If you could sum up Aphrodite in three words, what would they be?

Mind boggling read

What other book might you compare Aphrodite to and why?

There's an element of "Species", "The Lincoln Lawyer" and X-files: filled with mystery, suspense and a good old fashioned conspiracy

What about Buck Schirner’s performance did you like?

Amusing "little girl voice" but otherwise pleasant and flowing

Aphrodite

This is the first Russell Andrews book I have listened to. Justin Westwood was a delightful character. The bad guys were really bad and Justin Westwood was able to go toe to toe with them and win in the end. I look forward to listening to more by Russell Andrews. He tells a good story in this book. The narration was good.

Less is MORE

Would you consider the audio edition of Aphrodite to be better than the print version?

yes, the narrator made this audio worth listening too, he brought the book alive. I do believe i would have put it down if i had to read it

What did you like best about this story?

the freaking story line was great, the characters were even better.

Which scene was your favorite?

when Justin Westbrook decided to revisit the crime scene and discovered more than he really wanted

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Bad cops are good Too

Any additional comments?

I paid $5.00 for one of the best crime books I've purchased on Audible, and $20.00 for ones that should have cost me FREE
