About this listen
With Pietrelcina as his base, Thoman sets out each morning to the "Convents of Padre Pio." He accompanies the reader into these special places with captivating storytelling and detailed descriptions of what he encounters. He discovers that the cells where Padre Pio lived have been preserved with vintage furnishings to make them look exactly like they were when the saint was there in the early twentieth century. Further, each site has a small museum with relics and artefacts from his life. To bring these sites to life, there are over eighty color photographs included in this ebook edition.
The most captivating part of the journey, however, is the rich encounters the author has with the friars, sisters, and laypersons he meets along the way. Some knew Padre Pio personally. Their testimonies and stories beautifully inform the pages of this book.
The journey throughout the vast Province of Padre Pio was not easy. The author logged over 1,500 kilometers (930 mi) on his vehicle to reach the sites spread out across three southern Italian regions. Many are in remote mountain locations making them difficult to find and hard to reach. And yet, the difficulties of the journey are a reminder of the intense penances Padre Pio lived daily physically and spiritually in his body and soul – especially as relating to the wounds of Christ he bore in his hands, feet, and side. In this, Padre Pio shows us how to unite our sacrifices to the great sacrifice Christ made on the cross – and what it can lead to: “If, then, we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him” (Romans 6:8). This is the Paschal Mystery. And this is the heart of Padre Pio.
It is said that in order to know someone well, it is essential to visit the place where he or she grew up. The same is true with the saints. The sites associated with their lives tell their story. For those who will never be able to visit the friaries of Padre Pio personally, this book is like a pilgrimage that can be taken from one’s armchair at home. May God bless you as you make the journey.

Story
The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

Story
The book of Enoch was thought to be lost for over 2,000 years until, in 1773, a traveller brought three copies back from Ethiopia. Whether or not this ancient book was actually authored by Enoch, the father of Methuselah and great-grandfather of Noah, is an ongoing debate among historians and theologians. But all recognise the book of Enoch as one of the most important apocalyptic works outside of the Bible.

Padre Pio of Pietrelcina is perhaps the single most extraordinary saint in the modern history of the Catholic Church. His heart was pierced. He carried the wounds of Christ on his hands, feet, and side for half a century. He communicated with his spiritual sons and daughters through bilocation and mystical perfume. He read the souls of his penitents. He offered his suffering so that others might be healed. He built one of the most significant hospitals in Southern Italy. Most importantly, Padre Pio wanted others to be redeemed. In Bret Thoman’s latest book, he has created a fresh, new ...

Lucia Fiorentino (1889-1934) lived a hidden but extraordinary life. She was one of the earliest spiritual daughters of Padre Pio. She was also a mystic, victim soul, and recipient of numerous charisms, such as visions and locutions. In 1906, she had a vision of an immense tree planted near the Capuchin friary in her native village of San Giovanni Rotondo. Then she heard a voice: “This is the symbol of a soul who is now far away but will come here. He will be strong and well-rooted like this tree and will cover the entire world with its umbrage.” When Padre Pio arrived in 1916, she ...

The Diary is an amazing narrative that chronicles the experiences of a simple, uneducated Polish nun who received a special call shortly before the outbreak of World War II. Our Lord appeared to her and instructed her to spread the message of his Divine Mercy to all, especially in our current age, which is full of so much distress and worldliness. The message of the Divine Mercy is that God loves us all of us. And He wants us to recognize that his mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon him with trust, receive his mercy, and let it flow through us to others.

"We are to love God for Himself, because of a twofold reason; nothing is more reasonable, nothing is more profitable." On Loving God is first a touching description of God's love for us as unmistakenly demonstrated in the death of His Son. Second, it is a call for us to joyfully respond to God like the child who runs and embraces her father whose love is sure. As St. Bernard writes, "They love all the more because they know themselves to be loved so exceedingly."

Fr. Gabriele Amorth is considered one of the most important figures in the Italian Catholic Church. Not only was he a renowned exorcist, he was a journalist, a noted theologian, and biblical exegete. The recent Hollywood film about his life (though highly embellished) has only added to his mystique. Behind the man was a powerful faith. He could not have performed exorcisms for thirty years without supernatural aid. Toward the end of his life, while retired in a rest home in Rome, he revealed his secret: the Rosary. How would you describe your prayer life? Saint Paul urges Christians to: “Pray without ceasing.” (1 Thess 5:17) Do you pray without ceasing? Do you thank God for a new day when you rise? Do you ask God to protect you and guide you throughout your day? Do you seek God’s wisdom and courage as you encounter challenges, trials, and opportunities. Do you beg God’s forgiveness when you rebel against him? Do you long to spend more time in the presence of the Lord? Do you praise the “lover of your soul” with your every breath? If you want to do better in this area of your life, you are ...

St. Veronica Giuliani (1660-1727) is considered one of the most extraordinary mystics in the history of Christianity. A Poor Clare nun, she was a stigmatic who offered her many mystical sufferings for others. After fifty years in a monastery, where she served as abbess and novice directress, she ended her life essentially divinized. And yet, even though numerous popes have extolled her virtues, St. Veronica Giuliani is little known outside her native region and Capuchin Order. Story
As we all know, and as many of our well-established textbooks have argued for decades, the Inquisition was one of the most frightening and bloody chapters in Western history, Pope Pius XII was anti-Semitic and rightfully called "Hitler's Pope", the Dark Ages were a stunting of the progress of knowledge to be redeemed only by the secular spirit of the Enlightenment, and the religious Crusades were an early example of the rapacious Western thirst for riches and power. But what if these long-held beliefs were all wrong?

Padre Pio's life through the places he lived
The content of this book was well researched and thorough. The writing was well done. tTe virtual voice narration, while a good tone and pace, was bothersome in some places particularly with the pronunciation of some words, including "paschal." Near the end of the book, the author encounters a religious nun, and for some reason the virtual voice puts a distinct pause between the words "sister" and her name every time it speaks this name.
