Publisher's summary

He was just a freckle-faced, red-headed kid with green eyes and a strangely campelling stare when Mather Mastiff first saw him an the auctioneer's block. One hundred credits and he was hers.

For years the old woman was his only family. She loved him, fed him, taught him everything she knew - even let him keep the deadly flying snake he called Pip.Then Mother Mastiff mysteriously disappeared and Flinx took Pip to tail her kidnappers. Across the forests and swamps of the winged world called Moth, their only weapons were Pip's venom . . . and Flinx's unusual Talents.

Having first read some of this series many years ago, I am glad to learn how Flinx and Pop first meet.

Still wonderful

I must have read this series ten times when I was a kid and it's wonderful to know that I missed so many of the themes. The best books age well because of the layers that you get to uncover as you evolve. My heart is warmed.

Second Book Better

This was my first Pip and Flinx book. For Love of Mother-Not makes a good introduction to the series, but I found the next book (in chronological order) Tar-Aiym Krang, to be a more captivating listen. Pip and Flinx series is adventure / space oriented science fiction. Overall, the characters and universe presented are promising.

This story is about a boy named Flinx. He has been created genetically by a bunch of outlaw scientists known as the Meliorare Society. They are tasked with creating an evolved human being. Their order has aged over the years and many have died off after becoming villanized by the central government. When the society loses contact with their experimental charges they are eager to follow up on the ones that showed the most potential and being lawful isn't a concern. Flinx is introduced in this book as he is put up on auction by the government so that someone might adopt him. Being a prequel novel, this story is about how Flinx grew up, met his companion Pip, and found his new adoptive mother. The protagonist is a strong spirited youth. He is smart, quick witted, calculating and very mature for his age. He also has a talent for empathy. When people threaten his new family and friends there isn't a place on the world of Moth that can stop him from saving those he loves.

Moth is just one civilized planet in a galactic empire. This book takes place on the planet Moth, but in the next book Tar-Aiym Krang there will be more discussion of the planets and alien races beyond. While I enjoyed this book, I found the ending a little vague. I listened to Tar-Aiym Krang directly after and enjoyed it much more.
