About this listen

Trigger warning: Chapter One has a failed sexual assault with no description of the attack itself. However, the emotional impacts are felt throughout the story.

Can love grow from adversity?

An attempted assault leaves Miss Elizabeth Bennet seeking tender comfort from the man she had, at one time, abhorred. Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy's gentle compassion fosters a budding affection as the couple grows to acknowledge each other's weaknesses and failings while recognizing their own.

From Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, we know Mr. Darcy as a man willing to make phenomenal changes for the woman he loves. Once proud and arrogant, he transforms into the gentleman women have admired for centuries. Through Elizabeth's eyes, we come to know him and see beyond the surface to the inner man - a man willing to give all he has for the woman he admires.

As our heroine struggles with the aftermath of that life-changing event, we discover a strength of character we can admire and emulate. Not even the vile Mr. Wickham can keep Elizabeth Bennet from her happily-ever-after with the man of her dreams - Mr. Darcy.

Good story and narration

I really liked this P&P variation The story was decent even with the death scene. I thought it was handled tastefully. I didn't quite understand Darcy's actions but it didn't take away from the story. The narration was really good. Surely the author could have come up with alternate ways to describe the phrase 'sandalwood and citrus'. It was a bit much. Good short listen from Escape.

Emotional torture

The attempted rape is pretty well handled. But there is really no plot. It is just a series of over emotional discussions. It’s possibly fine if this is a subject you want to think about and reflect on
but for me it could have been a much shorter story.

Quick recovery from trauma, PSTD and love declared. SANDLEWOOD AND CITRUS, I nearly stopped listening.

Read it twice ! One of my favorite renditions

This reading I have enjoyed tremendously. I think the title should add something to the affect of “Mr. Darcy, his truest of heart and sincerest devotion to his love; Elizabeth”

Excellent but full of trauma

Well written and narrated. The plot centers on an assault on Lizzy and Darcy’s support of her afterward. It is realistic and the PTSD doesn’t magically disappear. Elizabeth is still fierce but is healing. May not be for everyone but I found it riveting and enjoyable.

Beautiful Dialogue

This novella begins in the aftermath of a failed attack, with Elizabeth bent over the battered body of her attacker and bruises just forming on her skin. Darcy and Bingley are the first to witness the scene, and Elizabeth clutches at Darcy as her only refuge. His arms and muttered words are the only things holding her together. Darcy and Mr. Bennet quickly plan to take Elizabeth to safety as Meryton revolts at the news of the attack.

While the subject matter may be disturbing, I thought the novella was beautifully written and handled the situation delicately. This version of Darcy, tender, caring, and articulate, was a pleasure. Our poor Lizzy is missing most of her archness due to the attack, but we still witness her strength of character.

As a novella, there's not much time for an intricate plot, but the author makes up for it with beautiful dialogue. And Stevie Zimmerman handles the narration effortlessly, her low pitch for Darcy is absolute perfection. I'm looking forward to Christie Capps' next release.

Good short story. Just needed more beginning information and less stating of Sandalwood and Citrus.

Violated by Wickham

Well written addressing the trauma following a brutal sexual attack by a man who was considered a friend

Worth the listen

Please be warned that this story starts out with an attempted rape. Some people may have a very difficult time listening. This is Elizabeth and Darcy’s journey through the emotional trauma from this act. It’s a quick read/listen but so worth it. It’s one that I will (and have) listen to again as I love the understanding and support given. Stevie Zimmerman again outstandingly lets you be immersed in the story yet stay “safe” for those who need it.
