About this listen
Uncover the dark secrets of Whitby's Forgotten Victims in this gripping new thriller by bestselling British crime author Wes Markin.
Detective Chief Inspector Frank Black has always believed that no life should be forgotten.
While consumed by the search for his missing daughter, Frank is called to the North York Moors when a decades-old body is discovered behind the cellar wall of the derelict Rusty Anchor pub.
With the help of unconventional Detective Inspector Gerry Carver, Frank delves into seedy past of the pub and its notorious poker nights, where the town's most notorious locals gathered. But as they uncover the truth, they find themselves in a dangerous game with desperate individuals who have all experienced unimaginable trauma.
As the case become more complex, Frank starts to question if he's been wrong all along.
Could it be that not everyone deserves justice?
And are some lives better off forgotten?
Bestselling Wes Markin is back with the start of an exciting new series, perfect for fans of David Gatward, JD Kirk, Rachel McLean, JM Dalgleish and Simon McCleave.

Story
When the chief suspect in the notorious Peek-a-boo cop killer case blew himself up, almost taking lead investigator DCI Duncan Bone with him, the psychologically damaged detective thought his days on the force were over. But when another PC is abducted and murdered in the same deranged Peek-a-boo fashion, Bone is persuaded to return to lead the new investigation. But as Bone and his team hunt a copycat killer, and with time running out before yet another cop is slain, Bone’s terrifying past returns to tear open old wounds and push him to very edge of the abyss.

Story
Perle Mesta was a force to be reckoned with. In her heyday, this wealthy globe-trotting Washington widow was one of the most famous women in America, garnering as much media attention as Eleanor Roosevelt. Renowned for her world-class parties featuring politicians and celebrities, she was very close to three presidents–Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower and Lyndon Johnson. Truman named her as the first female envoy to Luxembourg, which inspired the hit musical based on Perle’s life – “Call Me Madam” – which starred Ethel Merman, ran on Broadway for two years and later became a movie.

Story
In A Kid from Marlboro Road, past and present intermingle as family stories are told and retold. The narrative careens between the prior generation’s colorful sojourns in the Bronx and Hell’s Kitchen and the softer world of Gibson, the town on Long Island where they live now. There are scenes in the Rockaways, at Belmont racetrack, and in Montauk. Edward Burns’s buoyant first novel is a bildungsroman, yet out of one boy’s story a collective warmth emerges, a certain kind of American tale, raucous and joyous.

Wes Markin and Aubrey Parsons = Awesome
Two novels into "Whitby's Forgotten Victims" series by Wes Markin, and I cannot wait for more. Already a fan of Markin's other series, I thought I knew what to expect. I could not have imagined the emotional reaction I experienced in "Forgotten Lives." DCI Frank Black is a man battling a family crisis that informs his attitudes concerning his cases while building a genuine team. Aubrey Parsons brilliantly brings the text alive. I love his narration!

Too disturbing to Finish
The depiction of child sexual abuse and long term damage to multiple interconnected individuals was too intense for me to finish. I have no complaint about the quality of the writing. The reader was quite good. It was just too disturbing for me.

confusing
it was difficult to keep all the characters straight since they have no relevance to the story until the end. Also all the characters but Ryland were unlikable, especially the main character.

Even weaker than 1st in series
Weak in the same ways as first in the series, with some added flaws.
Author’s style is to barrage reader/listener with many potential story lines via introduction of a plethora of surface-thin characters. Most turn out to be extraneous to the actual (eventual) story. To me this comes off as a way to substitute quantity & “noise” for depth.
Same approach was taken in first book of the series, but this one was even worse. Working/collegial relationships between detectives did not move forward at all in this book. Looking for that was the reason I went ahead with this 2nd in the series. But, if anything, ground was lost in terms of dimensionality in those relationships.
I don’t recommend, & will not spend a further credit, even to see if there is tying up of loose ends from a situation introduced at the end of book one.
Narration is good enough, but not great.

Sad & Depressing
I caught Book 1 on sale and although it wasn't great I though the series had promise so I tried Forgotten Lives. Unfortunately this one was even more maudlin than the first. The protagonist , DCI Frank Black, is a mess physically, mentally, and emotionally, and he isn't going to change regardless plus the plot revolves around multiple child abuse cases. After awhile it gets too sad and depressing where I didn't want to read anymore. Not for me!
