"Narrator Euan Morton's gravelly voice and Australian accent embody Ted...His excellent pacing and gripping delivery maintain tension." — AudioFile Magazine

Candice Fox's thrilling Crimson Lake, the basis for the series Troppo starring Thomas Jane, now streaming on Amazon Prime!

How do you move on when the world won’t let you?

12:46: Claire Bingley stands alone at a bus stop
12:47: Ted Conkaffey parks his car beside her
12:52: The girl is missing . . .

Six minutes in the wrong place at the wrong time—that’s all it took to ruin Sydney detective Ted Conkaffey’s life. Accused but not convicted of a brutal abduction, Ted is now a free man—and public enemy number one. Maintaining his innocence, he flees north to keep a low profile amidst the steamy, croc-infested wetlands of Crimson Lake.

There, Ted’s lawyer introduces him to eccentric private investigator Amanda Pharrell, herself a convicted murderer. Not entirely convinced Amanda is a cold-blooded killer, Ted agrees to help with her investigation, a case full of deception and obsession, while secretly digging into her troubled past. The residents of Crimson Lake are watching the pair's every move . . . and the town offers no place to hide.

"Complex, human characters, and a dark, meaty story, and fine writing, and a great sense of place – this is one of the best crime thrillers of the year. Sign me up as a big-time Fox fan!" —Lee Child

Crimson Lake by Sydney-based, Ned Kelly award-winning author Candice Fox is a thrilling contemporary crime novel set in Queensland, Australia, perfect for readers of authors like James Patterson, Harlan Coben, Lisa Gardner, and Tana French.

Critic reviews

"Narrator Euan Morton's gravelly voice and Australian accent embody Ted...Morton varies his delivery enough to differentiate between characters while staying firmly in character as Ted, a choice that works well with the story's first-person narrative. His excellent pacing and gripping delivery maintain tension ...and listeners will hope for more of Morton as Conkaffey." -AudioFile

"Two of the best times to pick up an audiobook are 1) when you want to get sucked into a great mystery, and 2) when you want to do a backstroke through an accent not your own. Candice Fox’s Crimson Lake series, set in the croc-infested north of Australia, lets you do both." -Paste Magazine, Best Audiobooks of 2018 (So Far)

I'm looking forward to more.

It's very rare for me to read book series but I can write I'm looking forward to more from Candice Fox on Ted, Amanda and Woman. This story had me from Woman (read the book and you'll know what I mean). I've finished the book and it's still a toss up from me on who I liked most - Ted or Amanda. Right now it's both. What a great relationship. I also had no hint of the killer. I laughed out loud and went what??? more than a few times. I'm a fan.

Delightful

I enjoyed this book. The development of the main characters; How individuals can be broken or unacceptable by society and still move on to do good. I appreciate the lack of gore to introduce the crimes.
Well written, beautiful narrated
and very entertaining.

A must listen!

I got this as a daily deal and am only about 2 hours into this book - but, for just the language and lines spoken by the female character you MUST LISTEN. I laughed so hard about how one cat became 11 that I was crying.

Great narration and good story..

Like books that take me to new places..this time rural Australia. The author keeps the suspense of sketchy background of protagonists til the end.
Listened to the book because narration of Euan Morton who, as always, is captivating.

Awesome story!

I’m a mistery murder fan and this story nailed! Loved the fact that you don’t have one crime but 3!! Can’t wait for the next book!

The only thing that I didn’t like was the narrator. His voice was very unique BUT it was as hard to keep up to who was talking because he didn’t really try to do other voices... there are some exceptions with the female characters, but not quite. That’s the only thing.

Best Mystery I've listened to since Tana French

I'm a big fan of the Tana French Dublin Murder Squad series. After listening to those, I got hooked and tried to find something similar without much success. This is the first mystery I've found that I enjoyed just as much.

It implausibility made it likable

It's implausible because within a small circle of people in a rural small town there are three different mysteries/crimes...but it was also amazing because of that. The author was able to create really different and complex characters and weave together three separate crimes in a way that never got confusing. It held my attention throughout and went by too fast. I am looking forward to catching up wth the characters again in the next installment of the series and learning more about the one mystery for the main charachter that was left unresolved.

Another Australia-set crime novel

This is the third story this year that I've listened to with a setting in Australia....this one has the backdrop of lush vegetation and fresh water crocodiles to add atmosphere and menace. The two main characters, both damaged by suspicion or conviction of terrible crimes, are quirky ( Amanda ) and sympathetic (Ted). They're the best part of the book. The plot gets way too dysfunctional and unrealistic. I did like the narrator, though.
