Ghost story for all ages!

Great story! It is great for all ages. It was truly enjoyable! It reminds me of my younger years when I first got hooked on books. I hope she decides to make more ghost adventures for Janie and Caroline! It would make a great series! Look out Nancy Drew!

This book kind of creeped me out...

I thought this book was both well-written and well-narrated. There were definitely moments that crept into the back of my head and gave me both the eebees and jeebees.

A Classic Ghost Story for All Ages

I enjoyed Fortune House a lot. It reminds me of the kind of ghost story I read as a kid: Just the right amount of spooky, a great twist, and learning of new things and places along the way. The best part though is the young characters stepping up to try and solve the mystery themselves in their own little ghost hunting club... Just like I'm sure so many of us did as kids.
It's a heartwarming story too, about family and belonging and also coping with grief. Janie is a very relatable character, as is her mother, and the bond they share as well as the conflict is truly realistic. Janie's relationship with her brother, who is autistic, also shines, and will touch many listeners. The narrator, Lori Olsen, did a fantastic job with the characters and portraying the family's Hispanic heritage!

I think you'll enjoy this very much, young and old. Listen with your kids... Just do it with the lights on ;)

Great Ghost Story

Story - 5
Narration - 4

I received this audiobook in exchange for a review.

I’m all for a good ghost/haunting story. The author provided some great descriptions that helped to “create” the image of the creepy house they moved into in my mind. I would definitely read something by her again.

There were a lot of instances when the incorrect tense was used. When they were talking about someone having taken the photos of Jane’s dad, it was “He had to take them” when it should have been “He had to have taken them.” Or “Janie HAD hoped she made a friend” would be used if she were thinking in the past and hoping to have made a friend… in the past, but that wasn’t the case here because she was currently hoping “she HAD made a friend.”

I wasn’t a fan of the narrator’s stilted narration (could be her natural way of talking), but thankfully, it wasn’t distracting enough to make me want to stop listening.

Good

The storyline was spooky and kept my interest. I enjoyed the resolution at the end. Saying that, I have to mention what I didn't like. The fact that the mom drug those 2 kids all over to flip houses was a nightmare in itself. Add that one child is autistic makes it worse. Then she makes her daughter, a child herself , responsible (most of the time ) for herself and the autistic brother- I was incensed to the max. This was such questionable parenting and detracted me from the story. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest opinion. The narrator did a good job bringing it to life.

Trapped Spirits

Fortune House reminds me of the ghost stories i used to listen to as a child. I listen to this story with my 9 year old son and 10 year old God daughter and they absolutely loved it. The story is heart-wrenching, engrossing, suspenseful , and heartwarming when you see the depths of what Janie and Caroline will do to solve the mystery.
The love and compassion that the family has for each other jumps out at you through phenomenal writing of Jeannie Rivera. Lori Olsen did a fantastic job of bringing the story and characters to life. The story and characters are believable and realistic, especially the friendship between Janie and Caroline.
I would highly recommend this story because it is not scary enough to give kids nightmares but more like a story told around a campfire at summer camp. I received this book for free upon my request, but that has no bearing on me leaving this honest, unbiased review. I leave this review voluntarily of my own free will.
