About this listen

New York Times best-selling author Ally Carter’s middle grade debut is full of mystery, mayhem, and friendship, and it will keep you guessing until the very end.

April had absolutely no intention of becoming the only person who knows that Gabriel Winterborne, the missing-and-presumed-dead billionaire, is actually living in the basement of Winterborne House, sharpening his swords and looking for vengeance.

Now it’s up to April to keep him alive. But there’s only so much a 12-year-old girl can do, so April must turn to the other orphans for help. Together, they’ll have to unravel the riddle of a missing heir and a creepy legend, and find a secret key, before the only home they’ve ever known is lost to them forever.

Having recently become an Ally Carter fan with the Gallagher Academy series, followed by Not if I Save You First and the Heist Society series, I find this first Winterborne book fascinating and highly entertaining!

love all of Ally Carter's young adult books, and this was no different. These orphans of Winterborne are hilarious, smart, and brave. I really enjoyed this book and loved the audiobook too, the narration is great!

The storyline 💋🤌

This was a fun list and a good mystery with action and intrigue through out. Originally I was listening because I am a school librarian and it is nominated for one of our state awards, but I enjoyed it enough that I want to check out the sequels as well.

Great action adventure for middle grade students

My 7yo initially found this book at the library and we read it through. She was captivated from the start by the mystery of it all. The book is well written and hooks you similarly to Harry Potter except sadly, no magic. We were also in a Nancy Drew phase, and this story was along those lines, but more modern. There’s a little bit of language we don’t want our kids using at home in the book, but we address that as we’re reading together so they understand that the author is using it as a way to enhance the characters’ image for the reader, but we don’t speak that way to anyone ourselves. While my 7yo daughter loves this series (there’s 2 books), my 7yo nephew is scared of it because there’s blood and it can get intense for newer readers, I personally recommend this book for 9+ years old. My child is 7 though and listens to it almost every night to help her get to sleep. Enjoy!

A mindful adventure

This first book about the orphans who come to live at Winterborne house is packed with adventure, friendship and secrets. The orphans also begin to realize a family isn’t always biological. I would recommend this to both children and adults.

Loved it
