About this listen

An international bestseller and one of the Times's "Top 50 Novels Published in the 21st Century," Claire Keegan's piercing contemporary classic Foster is a heartbreaking story of childhood, loss, and love; now released as a standalone book for the first time ever in the US

It is a hot summer in rural Ireland. A child is taken by her father to live with relatives on a farm, not knowing when or if she will be brought home again. In the Kinsellas' house, she finds an affection and warmth she has not known and slowly, in their care, begins to blossom. But there is something unspoken in this new household—where everything is so well tended to—and this summer must soon come to an end.

Winner of the prestigious Davy Byrnes Award and published in an abridged version in the New Yorker, this internationally bestselling contemporary classic is now available for the first time in the US in a full, standalone edition. A story of astonishing emotional depth, Foster showcases Claire Keegan's great talent and secures her reputation as one of our most important storytellers.

Claire Keegan writes with spare use of language. It’s poetic and full of meaning. A story of an ordinary girl taken to live with another family. There she finds acceptance, caring and love. It’s a first in her young life. Anyone reading this story would identify back to childhood, remembering when they were crushed by an uncaring, cutting remark; or being lifted up by a smile of love. Lovely story full of life how it’s actually lived. Keegan is a marvelous writer.

There are so many layers to this story snd it simply requires reading several times. It begs for discussion. My daughter snd I both read and loved it and had two different takes on the ending. The simplicity of domestic life is played out in stark contrast and the story of family can have many shades. Read and enjoy this narration by a young child. Is beyond stunning.

This was such a heartbreakingly beautiful story. I didn’t expect to feel the tears streaming down my face at the last few sentences. This story left me wanting more, just like the girl.

Another good story by Claire Keegan. Family isn’t always about blood ties, but the deeper emotional connection shared among people who open their hearts and lives to others. The narrator of the audiobook did a good job of bringing this tale to life. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Great performance reading in an Irish light lilt. Sad story but even better than the film version “The Quiet Girl.” Nice to hear the tale in English since all dialogue was in Irish in the film.

Bittersweet story of abandonment and love
