This gently nuanced novel is gripping and memorable . . . a story of steadfastness and redemption that's masterfully written and sensitively read.

The essence of measured restraint

Beautifully written story of an unfulfilled, joyless, life. Worth reading as a classic example of such a life and of the author's masterful ability to maintain the steady, unrelenting pace necessary to successfully evoke it. For me, I will remember it as a touchstone of these qualities.

Elegiac story

Sorrowful tale with only sad endings but memorable descriptions of early 20th century landscape, people and small towns in Irish countryside.

No story here - move on.

While the narration was fine, nothing happened of interest in this story. I can not recommend it.
