Fascinating
I loved it. The characters were memorable and had emotional depth and growth to them. There were points where there needed some editing, with some characters names getting mixed up in dialogue. The pacing was also a bit odd. Most of the story was slow-rolling with a sudden sharp conflict introduced in the last couple chapters. Overall, enjoyed the book very much!

This Book Serves as an Introduction to a Series
There's no doubt - Haddix knows how to craft a good story. She starts with a mysterious plane suddenly appearing at an airport, filled with 36 unattended babies. Then we jump ahead 13 years to these adopted children who all start receiving warning letters that "They're coming back for you." The FBI is also involved. The book is filled with cliff hangers that make you want to keep listening. There's a lot of dialogue and thinking - with less action than Haddix fans might be accustomed to. At the end, you realize that this book was written to set up a whole series to come. A reader could easily skip it and move on to book 2.

3/4 of a story
I usually love time travel books and the concept of this series was quite promising. However, the basic premise of the time travel in this book has too many giant logic gaps to allow the reader to become immersed in the story. Additionally, I was extremely disappointed that the book ended 3/4 of the way through the story, so I don’t trust the author enough to read any more books in this series. In this first book, a group of babies lands on a mysterious plane and they were adopted. Things and people disappear and reappear with no warning (no reasons provided.) Anyway, the babies are adopted throughout the USA when they are 13 years old they are gathered together by 2 groups of bad guys with 2 different, but equally bad motivations (3 groups are potential bad guys, if you count the FBI.) Then, in the middle of the climax, the book ends with 2 of the 13-yr-old adopted boys and one’s younger sibling striking a ridiculous bargain to save everyone by fixing time (they strike this bargain while they are hurtling back in time.) Ummm... no.
