Take one bored princess. Make her the seventh daughter in a very proper royal family. Have her run away. Add one powerful, fascinating, dangerous dragon. Princess Cimerone has never met anyone (or anything) like the dragon Kazul. But then, she's never met a witch, a jinn, a death-dealing talking bird or a stone prince either. Princess Cimerone ran away to find some excitement. She's found plenty.

Grown-ups lie. That's one truth Beans knows for sure. He and his gang know how to spot a whopper a mile away, because they are the savviest bunch of barefoot conchs (that means "locals") in all of Key West. Not that Beans really minds. It's 1934, the middle of the Great Depression. With no jobs on the island and no money anywhere, who can really blame the grown-ups for telling a few tales? Besides, Beans isn't anyone's fool. In fact he has plans. Big plans. And the consequences might surprise even Beans himself.

Story
The underground mine fires ravaging Pennsylvania coal country have forced 11-year-old Brigid Howley and her family to seek refuge with her estranged grandparents, the formidable Gram and the black lung-stricken Gramp. Tragedy is no stranger to the Howleys, a proud Irish-American clan who takes strange pleasure in the "curse" laid upon them generations earlier by a priest who ran afoul of the Molly Maguires. The weight of this legacy rests heavily on a new generation, when Brigid, already struggling to keep her family together, makes a grisly discovery in a long-abandoned bootleg mine shaft.

More than stands the test of time
This book was one of my absolute favorites as a kid. Decided to download it on a whim as an adult, and oh my gosh, it was such a pleasant surprise. While it’s definitely aimed toward a younger audience, I would still absolutely recommend it to all ages. It’s a wonderful coming-of-age story with fairly simple fantasy elements, but the characters are so lovable, the plot is compelling, and the writing is great. I’m so glad I gave it another read.
I also think it’s worth mentioning that the entire story isn’t flowers and roses. There are some really bittersweet moments that add so much to the story and to each of the characters’ arcs.
I cannot recommend this enough. Great for kids, teens, and even adults. Heartwarming and complex enough to be engaging for older readers without leaving younger readers feeling overwhelmed or bored.
So much love for this book ❤️
