About this listen

Originally published November 2013

For 21-year-old Sydney, being in love with Kyler isn't anything new. They'd been best friends ever since he pushed her down on the playground and she made him eat a mud pie. Somewhere over the years, she fell for him and fell hard. The big problem with that? Kyler puts the man in man-whore. He's never stayed with a girl longer than a few nights, and with it being their last year in college, Syd doesn't want to risk their friendship by declaring her love.

Kyler has always put Syd on a pedestal that was too high for him to reach. To him, she's perfect and she's everything. But the feelings he has for her, he's always hidden away or focused on any other female. After all, Kyler will always be the poor boy from the wrong side of tracks, and Syd will always be the one girl he can never have.

But when they're stranded together at a posh ski resort due to a massive nor'easter, there's nothing stopping their red-hot feelings for each other from coming to the surface. Can their friendship survive the attraction? Better yet, can they survive at all? Because as the snow falls, someone is stalking them, and this ski trip may be a life changer in more ways than one.

Narration is not great

I’m usually indifferent to narrators. I mean, I’ll have Alrxa read me a book for all I care. However, this was really bad. Alexa would have been better (and cheaper) here.

It was sweet and entertaining

I really like the build up of this book from friends to lovers. This is the first book that I have read by Jennifer L. Armentrout and it was very entertaining. She does a good job building the deeper connection between Kyler and Syd and creating that angst. The world building was just enough too :) It wasn’t to overly detailed but it wasn’t just situation after situation. A good balance. I would say a lot of the drama and issues the two had would have just been solved if they had an honest conversation. There were parts I felt normal people would have just talked it through and avoided all the drama. But overall this book had the drama, romance and a bit of mystery with the stalker.

The narrators did a good job. I enjoyed both narrators interpretations. I know a lot of reviews didn’t like the female voice but I think she had good emotion and reflection in her voice.

I would skip.

This piece was hard to finish. The characters both lacked personality and their story was kinda cringey in a lot of chapters. The spicy scenes were definitely not as spicy as some of Jennifer's other work. I mainly thought this story lacked a plot. Marisa's narration was ANNOYING. Half the time she sounded robotic? I'm not sure how to even describe it. Rock's narration was good. His character was just cringey.

Predictable, annoying narrators

The story was very predictable. The male narrator is awful and when the female narrator read’s in the guy’s voice, it sounds like Naruto.

Surprisingly, just "ok"

Really enjoy most Jennifer L. Armentrout books; however, this one was just so-so. I just couldn't get behind the narrators. Marisa Vitali didn't change her voice to indicate which character was speaking so I spent a lot of time determining who said what. Rock Engle was better but I couldn't envision the cast of character through his voice. The storyline was tired and predictable.

Better than Reality

There’s nothing quite so captivating as when the lines of friendship get blurred. Unfortunately, in reality, the blurring of those lines frequently ends in a broken heart or a broken friendship, so I find this romance trope absolutely satisfying, since this is one category and genre where both sides always win.

After reading some intense books, I needed a change of pace, a captivating read (so obvs choice of JL Arm), and a guaranteed HEA. This was exactly that, and I enjoyed reading it. Because hey, I certainly want romance novels to work out better than my reality did. I mean, I think that's basically the point for this whole friends-to-lovers trope in the first place.

The story was great!

The story hit on a bunch of internal issues that people have all the time. And I like that it wasn’t about love at first sight or mates or anything. And the unrequited love was explained so well it was amazing. The narrators were not too good. misspoke some words and had a weird timing issue. I had to either speed up or slow down.
Other than that, it did explain how to get over certain things very well, and how to work around things in a relationship
