About this listen
Discover the story of a gentleman's most distinguished accessory, the necktie, with the inimitable Stephen Fry as your guide.
In this utterly charming volume, Stephen Fry excavates his epic collection of neckties and shares the stories behind them. From the traditional "egg and bacon" colors of the Marylebone Cricket Club to the exuberant Dalmatian pattern of a 1980s Nicole Miller design, each tie tells a story. Interspersed amongst the collection are diagrams to aid in tying your own Half Windsor, Van Wijk, or Prince Albert Knot.
The book expands on Fry's popular Instagram series, with additional all-new content—including an essay about Fry's own necktie journey. This handsome little book is more than an homage to a fashion accessory: it's an informative and witty tour of history, culture, art, and design.
BELOVED AUTHOR: Stephen Fry is an icon in many domains, including humor, storytelling, and style. He is the ideal guide to the world of neckties, as knowledgeable as he is entertaining.
PERFECT CONTENT FOR THE STEPHEN FRY FAN: For Fry's fans (especially those who first encountered him as the cool, collected, and always impeccably dressed butler Jeeves), this book is a perfect fit.
DISTINCTIVE GIFT: This book will delight dads, granddads, brothers, and uncles—or anyone who likes to wear fancy neckwear with pride.
Perfect for:
Stephen Fry fans
Men's fashion enthusiasts
Tie collectors
Anglophiles
Humor listeners
Fans of quirky popular history books

Based in part on Dickens's own life, it is the story of a young man's journey from an unhappy and impoverished childhood to the discovery of his vocation as a successful novelist. Among its gloriously vivid cast of characters, he e.ncounters his tyrannical stepfather, Mr. Murdstone; his formidable aunt, Betsey Trotwood; the eternally humble yet treacherous Uriah Heep; the frivolous, enchanting Dora; and one of literature's great comic creations, the magnificently impecunious Mr. Micawber.

Mrs. Harris is a salt-of-the-earth London charlady who cheerfully cleans the houses of the rich. One day, when tidying Lady Dant's wardrobe, she comes across the most beautiful thing she has ever seen in her life—a Dior dress. In all the years of her drab and humble existence, she's never seen anything as magical as the dress before her and she's never wanted anything as much before. Determined to make her dream come true, Mrs. Harris scrimps, saves, and slaves away until one day, after three long, uncomplaining years, she finally has enough money to go to Paris.

"Chekhov is probably better known in Britain for his plays than for his prose. For many, however, it is his short stories that mark the high water of his genius. It might at first glance be hard for those not used to his style of narrative to see what the fuss is about - and fuss there is: for most authors and lovers of literature Chekhov is incomparably the greatest short story writer there ever was."

Story
Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey are unquestionably two of the greatest epic masterpieces in Western literature. Though more than 2,700 years old, their stories of brave heroics, capricious gods, and towering human emotions are vividly timeless. The Iliad can justly be called the world’s greatest war epic. The terrible and long-drawn-out siege of Troy remains one of the classic campaigns. The Odyssey chronicles the many trials and adventures Odysseus must pass through on his long journey home from the Trojan wars to his beloved wife.

At 5 feet 11 inches (116lb, 32in chest, 27in waist), in trademark suit jacket, skin-tight drainpipes and dark glasses, with jet-black back-combed hair and mouth full of gold teeth, he is instantly recognisable. Story
In his first memoir, Josh Widdicombe tells the story of a strange rural childhood, the kind of childhood he only realised was weird when he left home and started telling people about it. From only having four people in his year at school, to living in a family home where they didn't just not bother to lock the front door, they didn't even have a key. Using a different television show of the time as its starting point for each chapter, Watching Neighbours Twice a Day... is part-childhood memoir, part-comic history of '90s television and culture.

In the second half of the tenth century, Byzantium embarked on a series of spectacular conquests. By the early eleventh century, the empire was the most powerful state in the Mediterranean. Yet this imperial project came to a crashing collapse fifty years later, when political disunity, fiscal mismanagement, and defeat at the hands of the Seljuks and the Normans brought an end to Byzantine hegemony. By 1081, Byzantium's very existence was threatened.

Ties as Stephen Fry can
If I would have saw a book on ties, I would have automatically skipped over it. By Stephen Fry though… I was curious how he would “spin the yarn” true to his style the stories are fantastic. History of tie makers carefully woven with his personal history make this book a real keeper and one you will recommend to friends and colleagues

Leave it to Fry
Leave it to Fry to fry the heck out of an uninteresting topic and turn it into a history listen with him as the main and the only character. It’s a very enjoyable listen about seemingly ties but woven into a fine connected fabric of various producers of human leashes and their target sheep. It made me think about my ties and when I actually wore one! I highly recommend this very brief collection of one anecdote per tie; if you are interested in that sort of thing.
