About this listen

Good and bad things seem to be coming in threes for Kinsey Millhone: on her 33rd birthday she moves back into her renovated apartment, gets hired to find an elderly lady supposedly living in the Mojave Desert by herself, and makes the top of ex-con Tyrone Patty's hit list. It's the last that convinces Kinsey even she can't handle whoever's been hired to whack her, and she gets herself a bodyguard: Robert Dietz, a Porsche-driving P.I. who takes guarding Kinsey's body very seriously. With Dietz watching her for the merest sign of her usual recklessness, Kinsey plunges into her case. And before it's over, she'll unearth the gruesome truth about a long-buried betrayal and, in the process, come face-to-face with her own mortality.Don't miss the other titles in the Kinsey Millhone Alphabet Mystery Series.©1990 Sue Grafton (P)1994 Books on Tape Detective Fiction Hard-Boiled Mystery Private Investigators Suspense Women Sleuths Women's Fiction

Critic reviews

"Wit is the most versatile weapon in Sue Grafton's well-stocked arsenal, and she uses it with disarming precision....Grafton excels in this milieu." (Newsweek)
"The story is complex; the body-count high; the sexual encounters feverish; and the villains chilling, in another can't-put-it-down outing for this talented author." (Kirkus Reviews)

Love the plot

I prefer the narrator, Judy Kaye, but, as always, I was entertained. I feel as if I can smell and see as if I was present.

Best so far

I've been listening to this series from the beginning and felt this was the best so far. While in the early books, I was able to guess 'who dunnit' relatively early in the book, this one had great twists and turns, keeping me pulled in until the end.

A Reach

Uggg, this story was so hard to follow I had to keep rewinding to figure out who was who, I’m still not sure I know. Definitely not one of her finer works; probably written by a ghost writer. I was disappointed.

A little dizzy...

So which Kinsey is it, the sharp, witty detective, or the deer-in-the-headlights young lady? This story has both, which makes me wonder if Kinsey is a little neurotic. A good story, but sometimes she gets into situations where she should definitely know better, given her background. Oh well, guess we'll see how she does next time around, if she lives that long!

The usual suspects

She never fails to delight. Excellent all around. Narrator is true Kinsey. Wish they were all done in her voice. Can’t wait for the next in the series.

Detective novel. PG17

If you enjoy detective writers you will enjoy Sue Grafton's books. They are 'light reading'. The detective stories are tight and not much blood is spilled. This has a bit more sex than most, but it is not graphic and certainly in no way kinky. The travails of a young female high school redel turned private investigator.

Disappointing ending

I couldn’t figure this one out up until the very end. I always enjoy Grafton’s writing but I didn’t enjoy having her bossed around by her bodyguard. He wasn’t that interesting anyway— just kind of a man’s man. The ending was disappointing— after all of Kinsey’s adventures until this one she saves the day. In this one she’s clever but ultimately saves the day. In this one she’s just a victim and for all his bravado her boyfriend isn’t much help either.

Great story, narrator not so much

G is part of sue grafton’s great alphabet series. I disliked the narrator Mary Pfeiffer. I have preferred the other narrators. I believe it is that her narration is too cold without any feeling of passion. I am hoping other of the dries aren’t narrated by her.
