About this listen
A coauthor of the New York Times bestselling guide to Social Security Get What's Yours authors an essential companion to explain Medicare, the nation's other major benefit for older Americans. Learn how to maximize your health coverage and save money.
Social Security provides the bulk of most retirees' income and Medicare guarantees them affordable health insurance. But few people know what Medicare covers and what it doesn't, what it costs, and when to sign up. Nor do they understand which parts of Medicare are provided by the government and how these work with private insurance plans - Medicare Advantage, drug insurance, and Medicare supplement insurance.
Do you understand Medicare's parts A, B, C, D? Which Part D drug plan is right and how do you decide? Which is better, Medigap or Medicare Advantage? What do you do if Medicare denies payment for a procedure that your doctor says you need? How do you navigate the appeals process for denied claims? If you're still working or have a retiree health plan, how do those benefits work with Medicare? Do you know about the annual enrollment period for Medicare, or about lifetime penalties for late enrollment, or any number of other key Medicare rules?
Health costs are the biggest unknown expense for older Americans, who are turning sixty-five at the rate of 10,000 a day. Understanding and navigating Medicare is the best way to save health care dollars and use them wisely. In Get What's Yours for Medicare, retirement expert Philip Moeller explains how to understand all these important choices and make the right decisions for your health and wealth now - and for the future.

Necessary information
Even if this book was written in the mid-2000s, it’s still relevant. As someone who is learning about Medicare for the first time, I found the info in this book invaluable. Yes, it’s terribly complicated … but Moeller gives us a leg up. Highly recommend for anyone seeking a foundational sense of this huge and vexing system.

Great Information--Well Presented
I liked the audio book so well that I also bought the physical book. It will serve me well as a reference.
The author takes mind-numbing cemplexity, and organizes it for presentation that is logical, practical, and often makes his points with stories. This helps the reader to understand and remember.
Well done!

Highly informative and very recommended
Medicare is pretty boring. But this book is so informative I remained hooked the entire time. I've been in Medicare sales for 4 years and thought I knew a lot about Medicare. This book showed me quite a few things that I wasn't aware of. It also confirmed certain things I had heard, but wasn't sure if they were true or not. I recommend to my clients turning 65 that they read this. Very nicely done!

very detailed and thorough treatment of the subject. However, this edition is several years old and doesn't reflect the current state of Medicare in some cases. it's hard to know what to pay attention to and what to ignore.

Too disorganized to be useful
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I listened for about an hour. The author starts by describing serious problems that people have with Medicare because of lack of clear information. Assuming that the author was using that approach to hook me, I listened to more. I expected him to then outline his approach to breaking Medicare into its pieces and how they connect to each other. However, he continued in the same vein with no apparent organization. A logically organized treatment of Medicare would have been gratefully accepted. This book is not it.
Would you be willing to try another one of James Foster’s performances?
Yes. The reader is quite good.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Anger at spending money for little in return

Very Negative and Overwhelming
As a full time SHIP counselor (not a volunteer) I practically could have written this book. Throughout the book, Mr. Moeller references SHIP counselors as we are well trained and educated on all aspects of Medicare. Therefore I listened to/read this book not to learn the content but more to see how another professional explains Medicare.
My two biggest complaints about the book are 1. The disorganization of the information. 2. The negative tone that focuses on the negatives and creates an aura of fear around Medicare.
In my job I explain Medicare on a regular basis and I think I have discovered an order that works for most people. Moeller is all over the place which makes it hard to follow and hard to tie all of the pieces together in a meaningful way. Moeller’s tone is very doom and gloom from the chapter titles to the many stories of someone having problems with Medicare coverage and the choices they made. In my day to day work I also explain these risks but put a positive spin on it.
Mr. Moeller’s negativity, fear tactics and disorganization make this book useless from my perspective. This book is also a tad out of date though much of the information is valid. I’d recommend finding another source for Medicare Information.
