In Money Magic, Laurence Kotlikoff, one of our nation’s premier personal finance experts and coauthor of the New York Times best seller Get What’s Yours: The Secrets to Maxing Out Your Social Security, harnesses the power of economics and advanced computation to deliver a host of spellbinding but simple money magic tricks that will transform your financial future. Each trick shares a basic ingredient for financial savvy based on economic common sense, not Wall Street snake oil. Money Magic’s most powerful act is transforming your financial thinking, explaining not just what to do, but why to do it. Get ready to discover the economics approach to financial planning - the fruit of a century’s worth of research by thousands of cloistered economic wizards whose now-accessible collective findings turn conventional financial advice on its head. But beware: Kotlikoff uses his soft heart, hard nose, dry wit, and flashing wand to cast a powerful spell, leaving you eager to accomplish what you formerly dreaded: financial planning.

Critic reviews

Money Magic is a must-read. An unconventional and entertaining page-turner, that will transform your financial thinking and show you how to improve your financial future.” (Jane Bryant Quinn, author of How to Make Your Money Last)

Money Magic is financial Freakonomics, delivering non-stop financial shockers - all based on common economics sense. You'll love this amazing book. It's full of wit, wisdom, and startling paths to a better financial life.” (John Mauldin, author of Thoughts from the Frontlines)

“Fact-filled, wisdom-filled, Money Magic is quite probably the best financial advice book ever written. You can read it for Laurence Kotlikoff’s sage advice, which tells how to manage your finances for a happier, better life. You can also read it for fun: there is a laugh on almost every page. You should read it for both.” (George Akerlof, Nobel Laureate in Economics, 2001, and coauthor of Phishing for Phools)

Excellent book especially for those about to retire!

I would recommend this book to those about to retire or are retired. The best “money” book I’ve read!

Worth The Listen

Laurence Kotlikoff is not your typical "financial advisor." In his day job, he is an economics professor. I've read so many books on personal finance, retirement planning and getting the most out of social security and I recommend this as the best and only book you'll need on those topics. The information is broad but focused, complex but clearly presented. If you listen to Money Magic and don't have at least one ah-ha moment, you might be counted as the first. I thought I knew it all, well at least most of it, and I had an entire series of ah-ha's throughout this book.

Great to have not just another opinion, but…

Great to have not just another plan opinion, but one that is more like a paradigm shift from where we been lead.

Not good

Terrible advice. Cashing in an IRA to pay a mortgage? I'm a plumber and I know better than that

Bad

The man who said"Really tried to finish, but it’s not for beginners, not for experts, not for anyone, it’s a book long pitch for a software product." nailed it.

Most boring book

Really tried to finish, but it’s not for beginners, not for experts, not for anyone, it’s a book long pitch for a software product.
