About this listen

In this terrifying novel from the best-selling "master of the psychological thriller" and author of Baby Teeth (Entertainment Weekly), three friends set off on a hike into the Grand Canyon - only to discover it's not so easy to leave the world behind.

It was supposed to be the perfect week away....

Imogen and Beck, two sisters who couldn't be more different, have been friends with Tilda since high school. Once inseparable, over two decades, the women have grown apart. But after Imogen survives a traumatic attack, Beck suggests they all reunite to hike deep into the Grand Canyon’s backcountry. A week away, secluded in nature...surely it’s just what they need.

But as the terrain grows tougher, tensions from their shared past bubble up. And when supplies begin to disappear, it becomes clear secrets aren’t the only thing they’re being stalked by. As friendship and survival collide with an unspeakable evil, Getaway becomes another riveting thriller from a growing master of suspense and a “literary horror writer on the rise” (BookPage).

Critic reviews

“A terrifying thriller about female friendship...Zoje Stage is continuing her run as the master of the psychological thriller."—Entertainment Weekly

"Strap into your pack and step into this inky darkness with Zoje Stage, and know that, after the sun goes down, nothing’s safe." (Stephen Graham Jones, New York Times best-selling author of The Only Good Indians)

"Zoje Stage’s Getaway is exactly the kind of heart-in-your-throat, how-are-they-going-to-get-out-of-it thriller that I love - a rip-roaring wilderness adventure story that tests the characters’ physical abilities and moral resolve to their limits. Tense, unpredictable, and utterly compelling, Stage’s complex story of friendship and survival is a must-read. I loved this book!” (Karen Dionne, internationally best-selling author of The Marsh King’s Daughter and The Wicked Sister)

“An outstanding read. Suffice it to say that what follows is a stunning - at times sensitive, at times feral - exploration of just how deep and powerful the bonds of sisterhood and female friendship can be and how a squeaky mouse can become a roaring lion.... Recommend as women’s fiction as well as psychological suspense.” (Booklist, starred review)

Very good story!

I enjoyed this book despite the leftist virtue signaling added into various places including characters. The general story was enjoyable, creepy, twisty, and ultimately satisfying. Recommend for anyone who enjoys a short story thriller.

Could Not Finish

This story has a great premise... but reads like a self-help book disguised as fiction. The action just doesn't progress as quickly as I would like, and there seems to be an abundance of inner reflection going on.

Story was a stretch.

Ok - some of it could happen but toward the end the absurdity of the situation had me shaking my head. Seems that the writer with all good intentions painted herself into a corner and had a tough time writing her way out.

Mediocre book, great narration

A daily deal purchase. I was curious about the author and like Brittany Pressley's narration. The women in this novel seem genuinely ridiculous. They're fit enough to hike the Grand Canyon, intelligent, experienced yet they allow THIS to occur? Sure. This one is a slog. Don't use it as a camping guide. Glad I didn't waste a credit.

Power to overcome, survive evil

I loved the multifaceted characters. All so well developed, even the villain. Kept me interested the entire listen.

Intriguing

Audiobook
I’ll have to say that this was a unique story line and one that took me by surprise.
Three friends, two are sisters, take off on a hiking trip in the Grand Canyon. Two are experienced hikers, one is not. With a past that needs to be healed between them, they embark on an isolated journey through the wilderness. Just a few days into the adventure they encounter a bad ass of a character who kidnaps them and leads them deeper into the canyon with sinister motives. We watch each of the women battle their own past and come to grips with what it takes to survive. Overall, kept me intrigued and listening.

nope, nope

Entire too much Liberal virtue signaling, ruined the book. Sadly, it was very disappointing

Not my favorite of Stage's work but still really good

'Baby Teeth' and 'Mothered' were such fun reads, I was a little underwhelmed by this story. The characters were great, well-fleshed out and alive, but the story just kind of dragged on in places.

The narrator was great. She did a great job creating differences in each of the characters' voices.

All in all, I would recommend this one. Just don't expect Baby Teeth.
