Publisher's summary

When warned by his doctor to rest, Rick Carton, a jaded and disillusioned editor with a Boston publishing house, retires to Texas hill country to write the novel he's always intended to. But Rick discovers he is not alone at the neglected old mansion.

Two lovable, Topperesque apparitions from turn-of-the-century America haunt the sometimes-bewildered Rick as struggles to face the enormous problems of contemporary society as the 21st century is about to turn. This sweet historical romance has layers of gay spirituality woven throughout the romance and just a touch of The Twilight Zone.

Gives new perspectives on love, life, and death

A very interesting book unlike anything else I read or listened to. There's the main character in the 'modern' time (the 90s, as that's when the book was first published) and the lives of two men who the main charcater may have made up for his story or may be spirits from the past.

For me, both periods are in the past and it was interesting to reflect on gay lives in that time. The characters were likeable and even if the plot was at times OTT with unlikely coincidents and had some lengths, the author aknowledged it with a wink and it didn't bother me as much anymore. He knew it broke some storytelling conventions and he still had to break them to tell his story in the way he wanted to. The fact that I was draen into the story and cared for the fate of a fictional character and the fictional characters that character may have dreamed up shows it succeeded for me to large extends.

I also loved the introduction of this new edition that gives readers and listeners a new perspective (heh) on the author and the story after many years have past. The narration was good and I feel fortunate to have had the chance to review this fantastical, charming & advrnturous love story <3
