Publisher's summary

There are only two places where the powerful and great in this world lose their courage, tremble in the depths of their souls, and become truly afraid. These are the manger and the cross of Jesus Christ.

No priest, no theologian stood at the cradle of Bethlehem. And yet, all Christian theology finds its beginnings in the miracle of miracles, that God became human.

These stirring words are among forty devotions that guide and inspire readers as they move thematically through the weeks of Advent and Christmas, from waiting and mystery to redemption, incarnation, and joy. Supplemented by an informative introduction, short excerpts from Bonhoeffer's letters, and passages from his Christmas sermons, these daily devotions are timeless and moving reminders of the true gift of Christmas.

Well done

Great insights and reminders of the truth that Jesus was God in the flesh who came to save us from sin.

A wondrous devotional

Bonhoeffer’s writings about our Lord’s advent are thought-provoking, inspiring, challenging. Listening to this each year makes the incarnation of Christ real to me.

A Wonderful Advent Treasure

Bonhoeffer’s writings in God is in the Manger are haunting given that he wrote these in a cold German prison not long before being hanged. His writings are thought provoking, touching and ever humble.
The sole drawback to this audio book, and, to a German linguist, unfathomable and offensive: they chose a pleasant timbre voice without consideration of his German language ability! The narrator obviously does Not speak German nor did he master any tutorial on German pronunciation! Every time he said Bonhoeffer, a woeful mispronunciation, it was jarring. When he attempted the phrase ‘Peace on Earth’, it had the opposite effect! I wanted to throw my phone at him! I will say that the narrator did a fine job on nuance and the gentle spirit of the writing when speaking English. A fail on German!
I will buy and recommend others buy the hardcover book or ereader edition for next Advent! This will easily become an Advent reading treasure!

Bonhoeffer is great

short, thoughtful, and full of perspective, this is much more personal than I suspected it would be. I hope I get to meet you someday, sir.

This has been a wonderful book to reflect on Jesus’s birth.

This is a wonderful book of Bon Hoffer’s description of the Christ child. I love the different aspects that Bon Hoffer gives us about Christ and his birth.

Beautiful, deeply enriching

With the profundity that Dietrich Bonhoeffer brings, these reflections on advent, Christmas, and Ephiphany offer much to ponder. Most of it was written from prison before his execution, a man well acquainted with suffering for Christ. Far from a “holly, jolly Christmas,” he reflects on what really matters and what Christmas really means.
