About this listen

A classic work of female psychology that uses seven archetypcal goddesses as a way of describing behavior patterns and personality traits is being introduced to the next generation of listeners with a new introduction by the author.

Psychoanalyst Jean Bolen's career soared in the early 1980s when Goddesses in Everywoman was published. Thousands of women readers became fascinated with identifying their own inner goddesses and using these archetypes to guide themselves to greater self-esteem, creativity, and happiness.

Bolen's radical idea was that just as women used to be unconscious of the powerful effects that cultural stereotypes had on them, they were also unconscious of powerful archetypal forces within them that influence what they do and how they feel, and which account for major differences among them. Bolen believes that an understanding of these inner patterns and their interrelationships offers reassuring, true-to-life alternatives that take women far beyond such restrictive dichotomies as masculine/feminine, mother/lover, careerist/housewife. And she demonstrates in this book how understanding them can provide the key to self-knowledge and wholeness.

Dr. Bolen introduced these patterns in the guise of seven archetypal goddesses, or personality types, with whom all women could identify, from the autonomous Artemis and the cool Athena to the nurturing Demeter and the creative Aphrodite, and explains how to decide which to cultivate and which to overcome, and how to tap the power of these enduring archetypes to become a better "heroine" in one's own life story.

This was such an interesting twist on psychology… it was rewarding to listen to the different Goddesses and how I identify with each. I was interested in this book I would have never chosen and would recommend it… it’s surprising

Fascinating to think about

This book was incredibly eye-opening and insightful. For me personally, I also found it to inspire a sense of self-reflection.
As I listened to this masterpiece of a book (that is filled with insights into a woman's life and how she chooses to show up and/or respond to it), I was able to see various aspects of myself, as well as the women around me. This book is detailed to inspire learning with depth, while also being rich in story to keep the attention. It is a wonderful listen, but also a book that provided me with exceptional takeaways that I believe I will continue to refer to as I seek to improve my own life. I also forsee it having continued applicable value in aiding me to better understand the women around me and how they show up in relation to themselves, in relation to me, the world, and others.

Although the analogies between Greek goddesses and personality archetypes occasionally feel strained or shoehorned, I feel the premise, insight and advice contained within this book are strong enough to warrant five stars. I will gladly listen again, read the hard copy as well, and seek out other books by this author.

The performance was slightly sing-songy (made worse at accelerated speeds, so I recommend listening to this book at a normal speed), with both odd pronunciations and mispronunciations that were slightly distracting but not unlistenable.

Excellent book, okay performance

This book took me through epic Greek myths and provided archetypal context that helped me not only to understand myself better, but also to start understanding other people in my life whom I’ve always struggled to understand.

I loved this book dearly and I can’t wait to read and listen to it again.

In a word: phenomenal
