About this listen

A novella set in the hard-scrabble world of James S. A. Corey's New York Times best-selling Expanse series, Gods of Risk tells the story of Bobbie Draper following the events of Caliban's War.

Hugo Award Winner for Best Series

As tension between Mars and Earth mounts, and terrorism plagues the Martian city of Londres Nova, 16-year-old David Draper is fighting his own lonely war. A gifted chemist vying for a place at the university, David leads a secret life as a manufacturer for a ruthless drug dealer. When his friend Leelee goes missing, leaving signs of the dealer's involvement, David takes it upon himself to save her. But first he must shake his aunt Bobbie Draper, an ex-Marine who has been set adrift in her own life after a mysterious series of events nobody is talking about.

Think of this as a side quest story to The Expanse main storyline. Very enjoyable but doesn’t mean much for the rest of the story. Would recommend for fans of the series.

Enjoyable sideshow to the Expanse

The only thing I did not like in this audiobook was Jefferson Mayes performance of Bobbie Draper. In Caliban’s War his performance of Bobbie had a healthy amount of southern drawl to her accent. In this performance there is barely a hint and it really breaks the fantasy setting.

Someone forgot Bobbie’s accent

Good short expands well on or we already know it’s a little more in depth

It was a quick background on the Draper family and the mars society but Bobbie is not the main focus of the story

A decent side story but not necessary to the main plot of the series

Another great story, and I love how the characters are so deep and believable, how they evolve.

The subtle elegant beauty of the psychology

Did not get pulled into this story much at all. I wonder if the payoff comes in after reading the third book. Seems like these additional novellas are just additional background on a character.

Unnecessary addition

There's a simple story here that is well delivered, and holds some entertainment, but what I was hoping for was building of the Mars setting, or narrative events following Bobby between larger arcs, or similar. It was instead a bit like following the life and times of a minor anonymous character who just happens to know the place and people I'm interested in. This isn't the fault of either author or performer, but how it was pitched / marketed, which I feel strongly implied we'd find out what Bobby was up to between books. That's technically what it was, but at remove.

Well written, performed, but about little

Idk if I noticed a change in Bobby's accident, but otherwise I think the other reviews are mostly correct. Very different story from the TV show here, and while I think it's a relatively good character driven story, really doesn't add much to the series other than adding to Martian culture (but that's just a minor part of the story). Mostly just teen angst + Breaking Bad.

Meh indeed (other reviews correct)
