About this listen

"It's just to say that no one has come to pick Nathan up from school, and we were wondering if there was a problem of some kind?"

As Mark Douglas photographs a pod of whales stranded in the waters off Edinburgh's Portobello Beach, he is called by his son's school: his wife, Lauren, hasn't turned up to collect their son. Calm at first, Mark collects Nathan and takes him home, but as the hours slowly crawl by he increasingly starts to worry.

With brilliantly controlled reveals, we learn some of the painful secrets of the couple's shared past, not least that it isn't the first time Lauren has disappeared. And as Mark struggles to care for his son and shield him from the truth of what's going on, the police seem dangerously short of leads. That is until a shocking discovery...

Doug Johnstone is the author of four novels, most recently Hit & Run, acclaimed by Ian Rankin as "great slice of noir" and by Irvine Welsh as "a grisly parable for our times". He is also a freelance journalist, a songwriter, and a musician and has a PhD in nuclear physics. He lives in Edinburgh.

"Excellent ...sharp and moving." (The Times)
"Calling to mind the best of Harlan Coben, Johnstone shows us how quickly an ordinary life can take one dark turn and nothing is ever the same again." (Megan Abbott, author of Dare Me and The End of Everything)

Gone Again

What a fantastic story, so many emotions involved, never quite knowing what the truth was. Absolutely loved the ending. I definitely want to read more from this author. The narration was very good.

Too wordy

I thought the performance was excellent very believable. Way too wordy for this type of story and after the 20th “big guy” I had to skip ahead.

Riveting

I choose an overall rating for this book at 4 stars, due to the excessive foul language. The story was very good and plot was riveting. There were so many surprises. I would recommend this book for teen to adult readers.

Loved Nathan as a character, great writing

Some parts of the book were hard to get through, because I hated the choices mark made. I think that means it’s great writing though, because I still wanted to see the outcome.

The narrator sounds like a hottie

Not a Nail-biter, But Good

The narrator did a good job of changing moods and voices to portray different characters. I had the villains figured out early on, as well as the motive for murder, but there was a twist I had not contemplated. Overall, I enjoyed the book.

Pretty good

Narration was the best part of the book. The book wasn't bad, it wasn't great, it just was meh.

Great story

I really enjoyed this story, it was intriguing and kept me guessing throughout. I do prefer a story that buttons up the fates of the main characters, but overall the way it ended was nice enough. The narrator was really good other than some mouth sounds that started midway that were unappealing.

Pretty good

it wa enjoyable pretty much to the end.........then as so many audibles I listen to, the end leaves you hanging. It was a cute ending but not a completed ending. Did the characters live on in normalcy, how did all the crminal activities get handled after everything was exposed? it frustrates me when a story leaves you with so many questions that never get answered!
