About this listen

A small-town attorney takes on prejudice and corruption in this powerful legal thriller.

Small-town lawyer Bocephus Haynes comes home late one night to find District Attorney General Helen Lewis waiting for him. Her ex-husband has just been killed. She’s about to be arrested for his murder. And she wants Bo to represent her.

There’s a lot working against them. Just before his death, Helen’s ex-husband threatened to reveal a dark secret from her past. Bo has been in a tailspin since his wife’s death. What’s more, his whole life has been defined by a crime committed against his family, and he continues to face prejudice as the only African American litigator in Pulaski, Tennessee.

Bo’s back is against the wall, and Helen resigns herself to a dismal fate - but a stunning discovery throws everything into chaos. There’s a chance for justice, but to achieve it, the cost might be too much for Bo to bear.

Bocephus Haynes is portrayed as the black Perry Mason - having won 77 cases and lost none. He's retained to represent the District Attorney General, who's charged with her ex-husband's murder. I have never read a book with so many people being described as dead - killed, died in an airplane crash or vehicle accident, etc. There are at least a couple ethically questionable actions by Bocephus - one involving a attorney-client privilege and the other a clear conflict of interest which prevents him from presenting a viable defense for his client. Both main characters are arrogant and demanding. The most likable character was Lona, the former drug addicted stripper who becomes Haynes' assistant. The narration was OK but nothing special. I have no interest in continuing with this series and don't recommend this book.

Not for me

An excellent murder mystery that takes place in rural Tennessee. The characters were well developed and the ending was smashing!

Loved the narration

characters fleshed out more would have brought this novel up. pacing also could be improved.

straining credulity to end the novel.

A clean whodunnit type style of murder mystery story telling without a lot of foul language or sex. Does include adult situations and violence, but probably would have a PG-13 rating if made into a movie. The story has good character development but I had to repeat the first few chapters to get a more clear understanding of who the characters were.

Whodunnit?

The only reason this book is not considered as the fourth in the series is because the Professor is dead. Otherwise it is a continuation of the first three. I loved the first three stories, but was hoping for something new here.

Disappointed

Definitely an edge of seat style. I loved it! And all the previous books I have read by Robert Bailey.

LEGACY OF LIES -- Great every whichway -- crazy plot, full of surprises, great narration.

Loved listening to the narrator weave how each character had a role that led you to believe there was only one conclusion left! WRONG!!! Looking forward to a possible book two, if any.

A great whodunnit with an unexpected ending!
