About this listen

National Book Award–winning and New York Times bestselling author Ibram X. Kendi (How to Be an Antiracist, Antiracist Baby) returns with a new picture book, adapted for audio, that serves as a modern bedtime classic.

As children all over the world get ready for bed, the moon watches over them. The moon knows that when we sleep, we dream. And when we dream, we imagine what is possible and what the world can be.

With poetic prose, Goodnight Racism delivers important messages about antiracism, justice, and equality in an easy-to-listen format that empowers listeners both big and small. Goodnight Racism gives children the language to dream of a better world and is the perfect audiobook to add to their social justice toolkit.

I really like this audiobook though I did remove one star as the narrator is the author’s young child and some words are given immature pronunciations (e.g. Dustice for justice, etc.) Overall though, the effect could be to inspire young listeners to pay attention well as the anti-racism message is delivered to them by a peer. It could be doubly powerful to read the picture book first, then turn off the lights as youngsters settle for sleep and the audiobook repeats the moon’s desire for justice and fairness in all the world.
