About this listen

Predators watch. They’re patient. And strike when it’s least expected.

In broad daylight, on a quiet rural road, six-year-old Osian Howells disappears from his own front garden. In the blink of an eye he’s a missing person, taken, in the words of a headline hungry press, for nefarious purposes.

DCI Evan Warlow knows that the first hours after an abduction are crucial. Decisions have to be made quickly. Evidence can get lost or compromised, persons of interest need to be interrogated. And one or two have the team’s antennae twitching.

Worse, the abductor’s deviousness seems to know no bounds as cruel taunts pepper the investigation. With emotions at boiling point, and under pressure from family, the press and his superiors are all ‘gravely concerned’ for the boy’s welfare.

As always in such cases, the clock is ticking. Warlow and the team need answers and soon, before a kidnapping turns into something infinitely worse.

Gravely Concerned is the fifth book in the DCI Warlow bestselling series of fast-paced thrillers by Rhys Dylan. Set in the heart of wild Wales, this dark murder mystery full of action and pathos will keep you guessing. Perfect for fans of LJ Ross, JD Kirk. JM Dalgliesh and Simon McCleave, with an added dash of dark humour.

The best one yet in this series

Just the right balance of an excellent mystery and continuing character development of the main players. The lovely Welsh words and place names trip easily off the narrator’s tongue for a delightful listen. More please.

Compassionate gripping story of child kidnapping and denouement

Realistic story with unexpected reason for child kidnapping - and compassionate insights into people’s behaviors - apart from the police’s “allergy” to the press, nothing else seems stereotypical - refreshing story line
Occasional mispronunciation of words like “gen” pronounced with hard g instead of soft - as in “to gen up on a subject” - but a minor irritation in otherwise beautiful narration. Lovely characters and thoughtful description of emotions, especially young child’s behavior. Compassionate story telling.

Wonderfully written novel about a difficult subject

Very much liked the fact that this story has at its core a topic which is both current and difficult. The author weaves a story about a very difficult subject in a way that allows the reader to experience the emotions that it causes in a safe space. The author wove a tail of uncertainty, and fear but did so in a way that created a very captivating Journey. I can honestly say that I did not see the ending coming which is in my mind the best thing in a book. I don't like a book that I know what's going to happen before it does and this one to not disappoint by the different twists and turns it took . I had no clue how the ending was going to unfold but as it did it was the right ending for the story. The more I read of this author the better I like the books and the stories that he creates. I only wish the stories were longer so that I could immerse myself for a few hours more in this world that Mr Dylan has created.

Great characters

The narrator has a pleasant, easy listening voice. Does a terrific job with accents and differentiating between characters. The storylines in all the books are good- so glad the author has not gone down the clichéd serial killer tunnel of death.

One criticism of the book/series- the dad jokes/puns of sergeant Gill are ruining the series for me. He’s a good character- these puerile cringe jokes are unnecessary and may deter me from listening on.

This series has grown on me.

The first book in series was a bit slow, but having now become used to the style of this author, I’m a big fan of these characters and the author.
