About this listen

Over a century ago, The Brothers Grimm compiled an iconic collection of stories. Over forty years ago, American cinema was infected by the walking dead. A few years ago, classic literature fell to that same infection. Now, it is time for the logical, but simultaneously unlikely, fusion of the often mistakenly labeled Grimm's Fairy Tales to fall prey to the gaping maw of undeath. Volume One of Gruesomely Grimm Zombie Tales offers up the first twenty-five stories... with a liberal dose of blood... gore... and of course... zombies.

An interesting collection of stories based on some of the old Grimm fairy tales. I am a fan of the Grimm tales and was interested in how these would be retold with a zombie twist. Some of these stories are easy to tell the tales that they are based on and the addition of zombies may intrigue people to enjoy these versions. This collection is an entertaining version of the old stories but did not fully pull me in as the originals do. Narrator Darla Middlebrook keeps the stories flowing but I was not fond of many of the voices used.

Would you consider the audio edition of Gruesomely Grimm Zombie Tales to be better than the print version?

I do not have a copy of the printed edition.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Gruesomely Grimm Zombie Tales?

The stories are send-ups of the original Grimm Tales with the addition of the living dead and I have to say that all of them were done with expert timing and a deft hand.

Which character – as performed by Darla Middlebrook – was your favorite?

Darla herself lent so much inflection to each story, especially the reading of some of the more "4th wall breaking" comments put in masterfully by Todd Brown.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed so many times at the comments and the inflection/prose of the narration that I found myself having to rewind many times to hear the story as my cacophony was too much for the audio track level. During the Rapunzel story I nearly fell off the treadmill at the gym, much to the horror of the patrons around me as I was laughing so hard at the "hair issue" comments.

I am a fan of quite a few of the Grimm fairy-tales and love to have them spiced up a bit. Some of these i remember reading from many years ago and the added gore and zombies "freshend" them up. There were a few that i didn't remember reading before though so it was interesting to be introduced to them in this fashion. I loved hansel and gretal as well as the voodoo queen stories the best, although Rapunzel had an interesting take on it too. There were a few stories that the gore/zombies/etc just seemed to be a second thought that really didn't add anything to the story. I can't say i am a huge fan of the narrator, some of her voices and ways of speaking just grated on my nerves especially at first, but after a little while i got used to it a little bit.

splash of zombie to known, and unknown stories
