great collection, monotone narrator

lovecraft's stories are all somewhat similar and can often make the reader feel like they are reading the same story over and over. thats nit a bad thing, but when you combine it with the narrators monotone speedy reading it can be overwhelming. i really would have liked the narrator to do some character work, but sadly none exists. So every story feels like the same character investigating some horror.

Great

For those who don't know HP Lovecraft is widely admitted to be the inspiration for every major Sci-Fi / Horror author and and movie maker of the 20th century and beyond. A must read.

Not for those unfamiliar with Lovecraft

I should have taken other reviews to heart. The content is there, but for work as deep and mindful as Lovecraft the narrator does jot do the material justice. I would recommend avoiding the omnibus for those who enjoy digesting great reads via audio book, as the narrator is extremely difficult to keep up with and holds not suspense for the reader.

Poorly read

Reader has a mono tone, run-on, no space between words style. His introduction to each story is well done however, and serves as a comparison.

Go to YouTube

I will have to say that I'm struggling to get through this. The narrator is God awful. yes he can read, but he has no range as a vocal actor. if you are interested in the background to each of Lovecrafts writings than this may be for you,but if not I would say just go look to YouTube.

Classic creepy horror

I wanted an audio collection of H.P. Lovecraft stories but was hesitant to buy this series after reading other reviews critical of the narrator's delivery. It's true that the narrator does at times sound a bit too happy for the subject matter, but I got used to it quickly. In fact, I really enjoyed the narrator's performance on The Color Out of Space. He did a great job when it came to doing specific character voices. I am planning to add the other parts of this series to my audiobook collection in the near future.

I should also add that the narrator also provides interesting and often witty introductions to the stories, illuminating Lovecraft's writing process, business dealings and personal events.

This audiobook is well worth getting!

Worth the listen

Yes the narrator is difficult to deal with, but try the read speed at X.75 and it gives it more of a dark feel. Standard X1.0 speed was practically unbearable. The explanation between short stories are enjoyable and help give context to many of the writings. I make many long drives and find this to be an enjoyable way to pass the time. Worth the read despite the narrator. He is not talent-less despite some reviews, just not one of the greats you will long to listen to.

Recommend for anyone super Lovecraft fans

Fantastic short stories, I chose this series because I instantly knew I enjoyed the narrator though I know not everyone will like him. I would say if you like him in the sample and don't mind that being how he narrates all the stories then you'll be fine. I was pleasantly surprised by the biographical side of the story. It gave alot of context I didn't know and enjoyed the vast majority of the stories as well.

Fantastic listening

It's an incredbly well done compilation of Lovecraft's later years of work. Has an introductions for each period and piece, with context and all, wich makes the listening much more immersive. Great work of narration too.

A good collection for the completist

This is a very useful and interesting omnibus. F. John did an excellent job. He’s a good reader. Though some may differ, I don’t like overdone performances: I like the way he serves the text. Lovecraft’s short stories, novellas and novels don’t need too much “acting”. They are self-sufficient. Yes, the narration is not perfect, but I’d rather listen to this collection than others I’ve tried.
The brief introductory comments are very useful for providing context. And you can get the printed version of this collection for free (pdf file).
All in all, one of my favourite collections.
