About this listen

Considered to the be one of most influential American authors, Howard Philip Lovecraft is synonymous with some of the best fantasy and horror fiction of the 20th century, second only to Edgar Allan Poe.

Innsmouth is a dilapidated seaside town with secrets as a hybrid race of half-human and half-amphibian creatures worship the gods of Cthulhu and Dagon…. Written in 1931, and published by the Visionary Publishing Company some five years later.

”It’s a genre blessed with many great stylists, H. P.Lovecraft’s baroque imagination and outrageous use of language still manages to stand head and shoulders above the rest. A timeless master of the macabre and the true connoisseur of dread.” (Michael Marshall-Smith)

If you want a grisly tail filled with atmosphere and subtly, look no further than a shadow over innsmouth. This books reputation as one of H.P. Lovecrafts most memorable tails is not unearned, and the performance of Phil Reynolds does this piece especial justice with his portrayal of the tale's fatally curious protagonist.

if you've heard of Lovecraft through his Cthulu mythos and would like to test his works for yourself, there is no better a starting point than Innsmouth, and this reading is of especial quality for the uninitiated.

One of Lovecrafts best...

Great performance by Reynolds and superb writing from Lovecraft. he does a fantastic job of constructing a town shrouded in mystery.

A bone chilling story

Shadow over Innsmouth is, hands down, my favorite Lovecraft story. If anyone is new to Lovecraftian lore then I strongly suggest they begin here for the full effect of what they can expect from this author.

A great introductory

I gave the story 3 stars because it is well written, interesting, probably fascinating in its time, but slow ish burn for me. I was expecting more..thrill? With Lovecraft regarded as one of the most significant 20th-century authors of supernatural horror fiction, I wanted to start out with this book. I think my expectations were a little too high to be fair but I will definitely try some of his other titles.

Decent, just not for me

I’m a huge Lovecraft fan, and this is one of the better reads of this particular story that I’ve found.

Outstanding

Mr. Reynolds does an unsurprisingly good job of delivering Lovecraft's words. What is surprising is the brilliant shift from his rich Brittish accent to the voices of the New England figures voiced in the story. I was oddly delighted in the midst of this creepy classic.

A good rendition of a classic horror story

A fantastic reading of a bone-chilling classic. If you're at all curious about what lies in the deep, I'd highly recommend this.

I'a Dagon!

This audiobook was great. The narrator did an excellent job and I particularly enjoyed the ending.

Favorite Lovecraft story so far.

The narrator did quite a good job. One thing that may be noticed if you read along with the book is that some of the words are misread and the Cthulhu chants are off....but who can really pronounce them correctly. Other than this, you can tell the narrator is becoming tiresome toward the end based on the number of mistakes increasing from a couple to a few in the 5th and final section of the audiobook. I applaud his efforts at reading this book aloud.

Great Narration
