Publisher's summary

In her best-selling Amelia Peabody mysteries, author Elizabeth Peters has created an award-winning mixture of vivid archeological detail, finely-tuned suspense, and witty romance. This, the 12th Amelia Peabody mystery, opens in 1914. As the tides of war rise, Egypt is threatened by attacks. Espionage abounds, pulling in several members of the Peabody Emerson household even as they embark on a new archeological season. Amidst a growing tangle of disguises and deceptions, Emerson's nemesis, the Master Criminal, appears. As increasing perils threaten the Peabody Emersons, their expedition, and Egypt, help arrives from a most unlikely source. He Shall Thunder in the Sky is a treasure; absorbing, intriguing, and highly entertaining. And the surprising resolution is one that leaves even the unflappable Amelia thunderstruck.

Critic reviews

  • Romantic Times Award Winner - Best Historical Mystery, 2000

"Filled with intrigue and nail-biting suspense...rich with detail and realism...ripe with tension and peril." (The Washington Post Book World)
"Between Amelia Peabody and Indiana Jones, it's Amelia, in wit and daring, by a landslide." (The New York Times Book Review)
"Despite having produced 11 previous tales of Egyptological mystery and detection, Peters still writes a deeply satisfying story that combines elements of espionage, mystery, and romance. Some big surprises are in store for readers while Peters deftly ties her subplots together, but a few threads are left dangling enticingly at the end, leaving fans to expect another installment in this extraordinary series." (Publishers Weekly)

Totally hooked…

This series continues to delightfully reel me in. I thought the different setting of the war would diminish my enjoyment, but each Amelia book, and this was no exception, deepens the wonderful experience and journey I am having with the Emerson family.
Great writing, excellent characters and story, and I wouldn’t dare listen to an Amelia book without Barbara Rosenblatt’s amazing performance!
Enjoy this book by Elizabeth Peters, I highly recommend.

Great wrap up from previous book

The book before this was basically one big setup for this one, which concludes more than one story line- very satisfying

One of my favorites

I have been reading these in order over the years and this was one of my favorites from this era in the life story of the Emerson family. The story takes an interesting turn due to the current events of the time period and it make for some new angles on the usual tomb robbing/murder formula that we all like so much. I very much enjoy this series and found this book very entertaining.

He Shall Thunder in the Sky

Excellent story - kept me up many nights. And the narrator is phenomenal. She is so adept at voices, it was more as if I was listening to (no, seeing) a play.

This is one of my favorites in the Amelia Peabody series. The characterization is brilliant and Barbara Rosenblatt out does her self.

Narration is only poor point for me.

I have read these books for years and the narrator just did not do it for me. Overly dramatized.

What a story!

Would you listen to He Shall Thunder in the Sky again? Why?

Definitely! Love Amelia Peabody and Ramses and in this one, the two of them ROCK! Possibly the best in the series so far!

What other book might you compare He Shall Thunder in the Sky to and why?

Its a more humorous Poirot in the desert of Egypt. Mystery and family drama with dry British wit

Who was the most memorable character of He Shall Thunder in the Sky and why?

To answer would be to give away the story unfortunately, but this is the full cast of previous books all up to their own particular mischief!
