Publisher's summary

Reese Jackson has tried to live up to the expectations everyone else set for her, but it isn't easy to do. At times, she feels as if the world is going to swallow her whole and like she can't breathe. All the mistakes she's made come back to trouble her, and finding a way out seems impossible.

Detective Dane Hunter has loved Reese since the first moment he met her more than a decade ago, but she never really saw him. Her strict upbringing wouldn't allow for her to be rude to him; however, that same social standing dictated he would never be good enough for her, either. Still, he longs for her, and his heart waits hoping she will one day love him back.

Danger that is a part of both of their pasts comes back to haunt them. Dane is tasked with protecting. Age-old wounds fester within them with each passing day. Fighting for survival must be their priority, but it's hard to ignore the pull of the heart.

Better

This was better than all the others because the narrator was a little better.
I'm confused though, because the first book of the series seemed to be set in London and the narrator had the accent. then the rest of the series the narrators were all american so that threw everything off for me.

The Past Not Left Behind

A romantic adventure involving two characters Reese Jackson and Dane Hunter. In the past, both characters care deeply for each other however never acted upon those feelings. This in part is related to significant differences in background, life experiences, and social standing. Each are brought together under dangerous circumstances involving a killer from their past. As both are hunted and seek protection and safety, they become romantically involved. Although this book is part of a series, it does stand alone with a storyline that is easy to follow. After reading this book, I will look forward to starting other works within the series as this is an enjoyable read. This is the second book I have read from this author and her work does not disappoint. For those that enjoy romantic suspense- I would say this is a very worthy read!

A police officer, a doctor, and a serial killer

Fast paced romantic suspense with a plot that flows well. All the characters are well developed and likeable. It's nice to see characters like Reese and Dane who aren't perfect and whose love story definitely has its challenges.

There is some mystery throughout and the author sneaks in some quick twists towards the end and wraps everything up nicely.

This quick afternoon listen for me and I look forward to more by this author.

The narrator was a good fit and did a great job staying consistent throughout.

sweet story about guarding a HS crush

Detective Dane Hunter has never had an easy life. Born to a single parent, only to discover that his father was a well known, wealthy man, then bullied by his 1/2 brother all through HS. The only bright spot in his youth had been a kind girl named Reese Jackson. She danced with him at prom when no one else gave him a second glance...and he never really got over her. Of course, years later and his brother pursued and dated her...then almost killed her. Dane's brother is a serial killer, but got away with it for a while because of his looks and wealth. Now he has escaped from prison and it's Dane's job to protect Reese. Will Reese finally see the real Dane and perhaps give another try at love? This was a quick romantic suspense with a good HEA. I plan on reading the earlier books to catch up on all of the characters in the story.

Wonderful, exciting and thrilling

I totally loved this story, there is nothing like first love, Dane has loved her all his life, she is a little slow on the up take. This is a family that has been through so much, Dane brother is a nut case and has brought more trouble than not to their lives. He is locked up but gets out and now the man hunt is on, who could he be after this time. Dane and the good doctor become close and find there just might be love but first Dane’s brother must be caught and locked back up. This is a very touching listen that breaks your heart, makes you smile and gives you a few laugh out loud moments. There is a touch of everything here, broken hearts, murder, passion, humor, mystery and a wonderful delightful ending.

The narrator is great she brings emotion, excitement to the story giving wonderful character voices, just the right emotion, pausing just enough to let you take it all in. Her male and female voices are delightful, you always know who is talking and what they are feeling. There are no background noises, no breaks, no volume changes just a wonderful listen you get lost in. I can’t wait to listen to more of her work.

This was a touching listen the narrator and author blend well together. One gives you a wonderful story why the other brings it to life with her wonderful character voices and true emotions.

Confusing

I found this book confusing. Unlike a physical book or ebook, you can't easily flip back in an audiobook to try to help you sort things out. The book felt like it wasn't about just one couple, but two (though one didn’t have a resolution). There are multiple secondary characters as well. Even though I have listened to most of the prior books in this series, I kept getting the people and their familial, work, and romantic relationships mixed up. That doesn't make for a pleasant listener experience. I felt like, too, that the author needed to explain in greater detail at the beginning of the book what precisely the villain of the piece had done and how it affected the women in the book. We needed to know the crucial details about him and his effects on others in the story early on; details about him are sketchy at the start of the book, not quite explaining the characters' reaction to the villain’s prison break and possible ramifications. The main hero is a classic underdog you can't help but root for. The main heroine seemed so decided in her ways at first that when she starts falling for her hero, it doesn't quite ring true. As readers, we need to see a growth arc, not just be told it happens. As you may be able to tell, I had a few issues with this book.
