About this listen

She needs a fresh start. He wants a second chance....

My new job as a chef in a small town was supposed to be my ticket to peace and quiet. I didn’t expect to run into the former hockey star who gave me the hottest nights of my life. And, oops, he’s sort of my new boss. So much for keeping my past where it belongs.

Ty still thinks I’m the fun party girl. He has no idea how much things have changed. One thing that hasn’t changed: the spark between us. It’s hotter than the blowtorch I use on my crème brûlée.

I’m already keeping secrets, so what’s one more? Our tryst is forbidden, it’s fun, and it gets complicated as fast as you can say “check, please”. I didn’t expect to have a future with Ty. And I definitely didn’t expect to have a baby with him. Some falls are harder than others. But it depends on who’s there to catch you.

I call this style of romance, "A Day in the Life" because you are immersed in the life of two people dating, but there's no real conflict or suspense. All issues are resolved once the couple finally open up and have a meaningful conversation.

The book discusses bipolar disorder, but I feel the author does not address what it is really like to deal with that condition. It's unfortunate because that storyline had potential for some real conflict and character building.

Great Narration

The True North series (from Sarina Bowen) has spun-off a couple of other great series, including this Speakeasy Taproom. I’m glad I finally got to listening, but it was only because it’s being pulled from the Audible Plus catalogue in the next couple days… I have been intending to listen for ages. I did read one a while back and always meant to return.

J.H. Croix is a fantastic writer and I enjoy her style. Having it brought to life by two of my top favourite narrators? It was the absolute best! I love Erin and Jason so I was ecstatic to see their names attached to this second book in the series.

Heartwood was sweet - a tale of long-lost college “buddies” who both moved to a small town to start over, reconnecting. They never thought they’d see each other again. Belle had a rather unfortunate incident which led to a bipolar diagnosis and having to leave law school and move back home (like, in with the parents). Ty was an injured hockey player also in need of a fresh start. When they both wind up working at The Speakeasy, things get complicated.

I enjoyed it a lot and there’s so many unexpected surprises in store!

Spin-off series, with the best narrators!
