About this listen

An epic tale of strength, compassion, and adventure on the western frontier.

Orphaned at fourteen, Hector “Heck” Martin heads west, determined to see the far country and make a man of himself.

Along the way, he falls in love with bold and beautiful Hope Mullen. But Heck is too young and poor to marry, so he heads west again.

During a three-year journey, Heck crosses thousands of miles, becomes a bareknuckle boxer, a mountain man, and an Indian fighter, and meets the likes of Kit Carson and Jim Bridger as he explores the gorgeous and deadly frontier.

Then, stopping by Fort Bent, he receives a letter that changes everything. Hope’s family is daring the Oregon Trail.

Heck vows to intercept and help them. But the Mullens face serious troubles—both outside and within the wagon train.

Can Heck rescue Hope before it’s too late?

Heck's Journey is a classic Western with a touch of romance. It’s perfect for fans of C.J. Petit and R.O. Lane.

Critic reviews

“John Deacon writes the kind of Westerns I like to read—gritty and fun with lots of heart.” (Don Bentley, New York Times bestselling author of the Matt Drake series and Tom Clancy Jack Ryan, Jr. novels)

Long on Romance and short on action. Not your typical western. The romance story was predictable. I read the whole thing, thinking it might slip in a little action or a surprise twist. It did not.

Too little action

I could not turn this one off and stayed up late several nights listening to this exciting story.

Great story about Heck

This book is so good. This book starts out with Heck being young and goes through his early years. He learns how to fight and how to be a mountain man. How to take care of himself. He falls for a young girl. (Hope ) Heck puts me in mind of Reuben Cole. I would love to see them together fighting the bad guys. I liked the side characters. Heck meets a young boy that lost his family named (Seeker). He plays a big role. I will continue with this series. Jim Meskimen does a great job narrating this book. I’m new to this author but am thrilled to have found his work. Not the typical mountain man or Oregon Trail story but very uplifting even when not realistic.

First book of Deacon’s I’ve read

Loved it! I love reading about the history of our country and those that pioneered and paved the way for generations to come.

Most western tales start in Texas or the remote vails of the Rockies. Here we join a young man in the Kentucky hollows in a difficult time in his young life. It’s almost a Mark Twain epic. Love and learning. Fisticuffs in St. Louis. Roaming with a mountain man. Fighting evil on a wagon trail. Doing justice and rescuing the family who first loved him back East. I’m now on my journey returning to the story of Heck and his life. Well written. Superbly performed.

I enjoyed this book right from the beginning. Good story, tense action and some romance. Can’t wait to start another.
