Exciting story introducing a new world!

What a wonderful way to be pulled into the universe J.D. Ruffin has created. I enjoyed each of the storylines that the characters follow. I am eager to jump straight into book two as we see how the threads weave into the tapestry of this epic fantasy series. The narration by Peter Kenny just adds to the magic.

Magic, mystery and intrigue

Received as an audio review copy from Story Origin, this is an honest review. Beautifully narrated by Peter Kenny delivers up making J. D Ruffin's Heir of Magic in an edgy fashion. In a story swirling political court intrigue, Princess Jess wants nothing of those her parents demand she marry to fulfill her destined inheritance. Jess loves another, the son of the local sheriff; and they flee to be together, find themselves plunged into a harrowing mystery where gifted individuals are vanishing and even Jess herself as a pawn of a dark threat looming in the background. Ranger Keelan and his allies are faced with a unique puzzle to get at the truth and protect the innocent lives caught up in the danger. Highly recommended.

Great Start to a New Fantasy, Mystery, Adventure

Parents- PG13- good for middle school and up
Language- None that I remember
Violence- PG13- normal to genre nothing too graphic
Sexual Content- PG13- Young teen forbidden love, mostly kissing, discussions of being sold off in marriage, sharing a hotel room but outside of snuggling to sleep it stayed innocent

While it did start a bit slow and the princess Jess was a bit irritating I really did enjoy this book. I loved the two-story lines- Jess’s coming of age and forbidden romance, and the mystery of the missing, kidnapped, and murdered people in the kingdom with the investigation. I’m looking forward to seeing where this goes next. It is left on a bit of a cliffhanger.

Narrator- 4.5 stars- he has wonderful differentiations in the voices, great acting, and was easy to listen to. I did find bumping the playback speed up to 1.25x was better.

A great read

A fascinating story. Full of political intrigue, magic, war and brutality. Tiana & Keelan have an interest in each other. As they start to explore it Tiana is kidnapped. Nobody kknows why and as they investigate it they realize it may be connected to another one. Then we have Jess a future queen who is being forced into a marriage that she doesn't want. All she wants is the right to choose. As the story continues they realize the people being taken possess magic. Meanwhile Keelan has the job of investigating Tiana's disappearance. What he learns is that there is a much bigger conspiracy going on and possibly a war. The characters are eell developed and it has a great plot. Looking forward to book 2.

Fantastic start to a new fantasy series

The story was a fun adventure with some magic, a few kidnappings, and deadly politics. It's brother against brother, mother against daughter.

The worldbuilding is thorough and understandable. The plot and characters develop nicely as more of the world is revealed. Told through multiple POVs, I enjoyed experiencing parts of the world through the eyes of different characters, and watching the storylines merge toward the end, which left me wanting more but not frustrated, so it was perfect to continue my interest in the series.

Peter Kenny was a great narrator and brought the story to life.
