One title to change his life...

A disgraced son with a dark reputation, William Ferguson Avenel is content to live in exile in Scotland - until his father dies in the scandal of the Season, making him the new Duke of Rothwell and leaving him in charge of his young sisters. With rumors of insanity swirling around their family, the girls desperately need a chaperone. And he thinks he's found the lady for the job...until Rothwell discovers her dangerous secret life.

One chance to break the rules....

Lady Madeleine Vaillant may be the perfect chaperone, but she can't face her blighted future without making one glorious memory for herself. In disguise on a London stage, she finds all the adoration she never felt from the ton. But when she's nearly recognized, she will do anything to hide her identity - even make a devil's bargain with Rothwell, who saves her from discovery by claiming her as his mistress. She'll take the pleasure he offers - but Madeleine won't lose her heart in the bargain.

One season to fall in love...

Every stolen kiss could lead to discovery, and Rothwell's old enemies are determined to ruin them both. But as their dangerous passion ignites their hearts and threatens their futures, how can an heiress who dreams of freedom deny the duke who demands her love?

Good free read

This is a pretty solid regency romance book for a free read. Of course it's fairly predictable but most of these books are. Its a decent blend of steaminess with plot, a bit on the tame side, but not totally, and the characters are pretty well developed. I liked the side characters more than the main characters so I'm looking forward to reading the next books in the series. Narrator wasn't terrible, not one of my favorites, but didn't bother me in anyway. 7/10 overall.

great story

I read some other reviews about how unbelievable this story was. Well, all of these stories are unbelievable, which makes them fit perfectly into the fiction category. if you don't try to critique it so much for that reason, then this is a great story.

I loved that Mad was a strong woman who wanted to live out something that was only a dream for women of her time. I loved that Ferguson was supportive. I love that, even though he became her "protector" this didn't turn out to be one of those stories where the woman got herself into trouble because she dared to live her dream and had to be rescued from a dire situation by the man. If anything, I think SHE ends up being the hero who saves HIM. She is brave and daring and no one really sees it except him and eventually her family. And I loved her cousin/guardian, Alex. I hope one of the other books includes a love story for him.

As for the narrarator, I agree with others who have commented on how slowly this is read. Fortunately Audible has a feature where you can speed up the pace of the narrator. I listened to this at 105-110% speed and it was much better. Problem solved.

Can't wait to listen to the next in the series!

Very entertaining!

This book had something for everyone who enjoys the Romance genre. I believed how the two came to love each other, and I believed the hang-ups. The Shakespearian themed mishaps that set up the sound of the story were also very entertaining. Definitely recommend!

A good romp through Victorian times.

A believable plot for the time period, when obsession with a lady's virtue makes it challenging to pursue one's dreams.

GREAT!

this is my first story and by Sarah Ramsey. I have to admit it was very well written. Madeline was a wonderful character. but I have to say the steamy love scenes where the main attraction. There were several peppered throughout the story and it really revved up the heat! did I mention how well written this story was. The characters had depth and I could totally see the attraction between Madeline and Ferguson. I think the book started to drag a bit at the end but, I knew it was mainly to wrap everything up. definitely will be listening to it again. The narration was a bit choppy until I realized Madeline was French and it was a French accent the narrator was portraying. Once I understood that listening went a lot smoother.

Very interesting

New to me author.
I enjoyed the timing of each character and the suspense of the story.
Ferguson really got what Madeline needed and wanted. Ferguson only wanted a sponsor for his sisters and Maddie wanted to act on the stage.
When they get together sparks fly.
The narrator did a wonderful job with the reading of the story.

The "bad" guy wins

What was one of the most memorable moments of Heiress Without a Cause?

When William discovers the Madeline's true identity.

What about Emma Powell’s performance did you like?

I love her distinction of characters. I love to listen to books, rather than watch TV or reading (love to read, bad eyesight though) and having an awesome narrator brings the story to life.
