About this listen

After global devastation, the last remnants of Earth sent a handful of colonists of a distant terraformed world to give humanity one last, desperate chance. Unable to provide the technology required for an advanced civilization, the founders instilled in the colonists a strict code of conduct and gave them a few precious imprinting devices: glass helmets that contain all of Earth's scientific knowledge.

Once in a generation, the heir to the province of Laal begins the arduous training required to survive the imprinting of the Glass Helm and acquire the knowledge of the lost Earth. But Leland de Laal, the youngest son of one of Agatsu's greatest leaders, has climbed the forbidden rock spire where the Helm is kept and donned it, unaware that its knowledge has a terrible price. To an unprepared mind, it brings madness, agony, and even death.

Great story at a great price

If you liked this one, you'll love Exo by the same author. Both feature strong protagonists, interesting settings, great character building, aikido, and a nice sci-fi edge.

Not my favorite Gould story,

that would be his "Jumper" series! This was solid, but if there was another in the series I would pass. Good SciFi story, a few lose ends.

Missing Chapters

Would you try another book from Steven Gould and/or Paul Boehmer?

Yes

Any additional comments?

This is a wonderful book, it is my favorite of all of Steve Gould's books. Paul Boehmer's performance is also excellent. However the book or at least my copy which I have tried downloading three times is missing all of chapter 21, and parts of chapters 20, 22 and 23. It is also missing Chapter 24. This was probably an editorial fault, however it earns the book the two star review even though I love the book and thought the performance excellent.

Good solid story and performance!

I enjoyed this story very much! I had no expectations other than wondering how the author would manage sci fi with medieval world. Fun exciting and moving story with a conscious.

Awkward pauses and poor cadence in the narration

If found the narration to have a poor cadence and awkward pauses. It also lacks the crisp voice that I prefer.
