About this listen

A modern-day soldier, running from the confining paradise of the Florida Keys, finds himself crushed by guilt and unable to acclimate to the civilian world around him. A reluctant Texas outlaw makes his living on gunpowder and lead, selling his only real talent across the Old West, until a hit turned tragically wrong makes him face what he has become. A privileged teenage girl's first love abandons her, leading her to a heartbreaking, coast to coast journey of self-discovery. A jaded smuggler succumbs to the Siren’s Song, but his last chance at love and redemption threatens to rip him apart like a ship on the jagged rocks. And a half Native-American love child of a Pentecostal preacher is wagered in a deal with the Devil, chasing his mother's soul through a battleground of conflicting cultures and his father's rage.

Hemingway, a collaboration by singer-songwriter Dan Johnson and acclaimed novelist Travis Erwin, is a collection of stories inspired by Johnson's album of the same name. The gripping narrative follows five unique tales and five wildly diverse characters, whose lives are unpredictably interwoven across time. The stories serve as a companion to the music and expound on the dialectical impact of decisions made or passed up. What is Good? What is Evil? And can we ever really know the difference until years, even generations have passed? The audiobook includes a forward by legendary Texas songwriter, Walt Wilkins, as well as a download code for the digital, mp3 version of the album.

Creative and captivating

The narration is amazing!! The story was genius. The character's weaved together with an amazing and mysterious thread. The integration of the album with the same name was one of the most creative combinations I have had the pleasure of listening too.

“Hemingway” Isn’t Just Another Audiobook

I listened to this rather extraordinary novel in one sitting. Then it colored the rest of my day, and in an age where content comes at you like a freight train, the characters and their songs keep playing in my head. The key character, Hemingway, like his namesake, was larger than life and came to a very sad end, but it is Emily, Billy, Captain Rick, and the rest of the supporting cast, each with their own story and their own song, all caught up in a two-thousand year old betrayal, that kept moving me in unexpected ways. And yeah, I loved Dan Johnson’s voice. It is mesmerizing. Once I started listening, I didn’t want to stop. But, I believe it was the unique merging of two different mediums that made this novel so compelling. If Dan and Travis have produced a distinctive form of art with more power than the typical audiobook, I will guess that it is veteran suicide, the honorable cause much of the book's profits go to, that has brought such a highly creative heart to their work. Kudos to them.
