Publisher's summary

A darkly humorous, surprisingly poignant, and utterly gripping debut novel about a guy who works in Hell (literally) and is on the cusp of a big promotion if only he can get one more member of the wealthy Harrison family to sell their soul.

Peyote Trip has a pretty good gig in the deals department on the fifth floor of Hell. Sure, none of the pens work, the coffee machine has been out of order for a century, and the only drink on offer is Jägermeister, but Pey has a plan—and all he needs is one last member of the Harrison family to sell their soul.

When the Harrisons retreat to the family lake house for the summer, with their daughter Mickey’s precocious new friend, Ruth, in tow, the opportunity Pey has waited a millennium for might finally be in his grasp. And with the help of his charismatic coworker Calamity, he sets a plan in motion.

But things aren’t always as they seem, on Earth or in Hell. And as old secrets and new dangers scrape away at the Harrisons’ shiny surface, revealing the darkness beneath, everyone must face the consequences of their choices.

The Woman Narrator Is Incredibly Annoying

This is the second book I haven’t been able to finish because of this woman. She’s so, so whiny. Also, the dramatic intake of breath following the end of clauses/sentences is absolutely ridiculous. People need to stop hiring her to read their books unless said books are the equivalent of Sex and the City of Gossip Girl or Fifty Shades.

Loved this take on things

This book was a fresh take on society’s ideas of hell and all its accessories. I devoured this story in under a day. I also love the narrators, they really did the story justice

A must-listen

This book was so creative and clever and funny on the surface. As you progress through, it becomes more poignant and sharp. The culmination of events was bittersweet and beautiful. It's def in my rotation for re-listening.

Hand me a water, I have a Book Hangover.

This book surprised me, I read around 100 books a year and not often do I finish a book and think " wow, I am sad I can not read this again for the first time." It is a wild ride, that had it not been written so perfectly it could have been a mess. This author knows how to tell a complicated dark story with humor, grace and elegance. She is very talented, I was shocked that this is her debut novel. You will have a Book Hangover. It is a wild ride and dark but also funny. Her characters are clear and written so realistically that you know what part of the story your in as it goes thru time. Just buy it. Just read but be prepared you will still be thinking about it long after you have finished it.

Amazing story and narration!

Wow! This book surprised me with how great it was. I’ll be honest, the middle was a little chaotic, but it wrapped up nicely in the end and definitely makes you think! Loved it!

A Devilishly Satiating Read

Let's start with the fact that the narration in this book is phenomenal. The narrators do a superb job of delivering every modicum of sass, humour, or anxiety that the characters are facing. Narration should enhance the story, not detract from it, and they certainly accomplish this by leagues.

The story itself is a quick read (or listen in this case) and does a great job of teasing out the next big 'twist'. Since this is a book about Hell, there's a fair amount of grim humour, but it's always tounge in cheek and the whole idea of Hell just being a mediocore office job is a fun premise.

The relationship between Peyote and Cal steals the show, but each character gets a grand opportunity to come into thier own and you get an appreciation for each one. I don't typically get emotional while reading about characters, but I'd be lying if I wasn't silently rooting for each one.

At the end of the day, I'd highly recommend this book as a fun and charming read.

This book has everything

Imagination, of course. Along with that there is phycology, hope, love, revenge, philosophy, surprise, horror, cruelty, and the best descriptions I’ve read in a long time. I’m giving it to all my friends.
