About this listen

Drow Princess for Hire.

Skills include wielding dual magics, stabbing bad guys with the pointy end, and protecting the good people of Seattle from dark wizards.

Also wraps a mean sashimi roll.

The name Brownstone evokes a certain reaction no matter who hears it. And for Alison Brownstone that’s both a blessing and a curse.

But it’s time for her to step out of her dad’s shadow and make a new name for herself.

She just has to decide what she wants that name to mean.

At 25 years old, it’s time Alison chose who she wants to be now that she’s grown up. She has many role models who’ve shaped her and trained her into the woman she is now.

But she is her father’s daughter....

Old face, new attitude.

Join Alison as she faces off against technomagic, cults, criminal organizations, and the growing discrimination against all things magical.

NOTE: While the series continues in the same world with some returning characters, it takes place years later and does stand alone. No prior experience necessary.

Alison claims Seattle as her city

Alison Brownstone delivered action from the opening of the story. She displayed exceptional fighting and magical skills. Her maternal and adopted family lineage is impressive. Establishing her reputation based upon her own actions is her main motivation in accepting jobs. Her line of work is in investigating though she will become side-tracked to right any injustice she finds.

Yes, she is powerful even with a debilitating disease. The Advance Magical Deficiency Syndrome is a virus. When Alison uses her magic, she experiences fatigue, pain and difficulty with higher level magic. She shows smarts in her ability to adapt but less smarts in her ability to proceed with caution when going into fights. Her opening line into battle is do you know who I am? When she uses her wish to have her sight restored, she was imbued with extra magic. She was strategic in overcoming insurmountable odds when a mall full of people were going to be used as fodder.

Alison is a straightforward woman, see bad people, I kill bad people. I felt I came in the middle of her life. She has an intense hatred for the dark wizards because of what they did to her ex-boyfriend Tanner. That relationship and those of her college friends comprise the series The School of Necessary Magic. I would hope it would provide information as to why she was targeted for the virus. My disappointment is Alison is totally unaware that she has been targeted with a virus. I hope as I follow the series the conspiracy will be uncovered.

Right now, Alison has moved to Seattle. She is setting up an investigating business. She has taken the advice of her mom and the billionaire Scott Carlyle and will form a team of people to work with her. Hana her friend and investigator, is a nine-tailed fox who uses charm to convince people to do what she wants. Her previous occupation was running cons on people.

I will continue with the next book to see the unique people that Alison’s hires and to see if she learns that she was intentionally infected.

Exciting book and wonderful narration..

Well, this was a fun book. And, Alison could sure kick some butt. She killed so many bad guys in her home town it was suggested she move. The she killed more bad guys in Seattle once she move there. She spent time protecting billionaire Scott Carlyle, so I'm hoping something comes of that.

No romance yet and the F-bomb was used 42 times.

As for the narration: The main reason I tried this book was because it was being narrated by Kate Rudd, and you can't get mush better than her.

too bad about the language

too much bad language. I love the story but since the graduation the language has become so bad that I can't enjoy the book any more.

Definitely a good Audible

Family is what this story is about be it birth family or adoptive. what those parents teach is how one views life and the world.
Yet another thing that you come to understand is that there are no black and white answers to situations or life decisions. Sometimes compromises are made.
Narration by Kate Rudd was done very well. She has a good range of voices and subtle dialects. She easley draws in the listener and makes it hard to put down the Audible. Say to get to bed at a decent hour.

Fun book and great narration.

Always something happening, never a dull moment.

Story line is good and I really enjoyed the character development in the first book of this series. Lots of action, butt kicking and adventure. Allison is a strong female lead character with a lot of confidence.

Thoroughly enjoyable listen I recommend.

The narration is great. Kate Rudd does a great job with all the voices and you know who is speaking. She reads with emotion as called for and does the male voices very well. Great narration author combo.

What is with the language?

While I am not a stick in the mud and the use of foul language is not totally uncommon in the world. While profanity can be used in ways to show strong feelings or be used as an intensifier, I still believe it simply shows a lack of vocabulary.

I have enjoyed the Brownstone series and this book has a wonderful story. In reading or listening to any of the Kurtherian books by Michael Anderle my only problem is with the language. Even in the military there was not as much profanity as I have read or listened to in these books but I was not in the U.S. military so perhaps in the U.S. military it is common place but I do not know. In my current work and daily life about the worst I hear is crap, damn, shit and maybe an F-Bomb once in a great while. In the first Kurtherian series with Bethany Anne I could kind of see how Michael was using the language as a bonding agent and showing how Bethany Anne was a woman who takes no crap from anyone but that got old real fast. In all the books I have read that was written by or written with Michael Anderle my one sticky point is the language.

Kate is one of my favorite narrators and she always does a wonderful job.
Overall this is a good book and a good story that could have been great with a little less foul language

Michael, Judith, Craig, Justin, Ell and all of the writers in the Kurtherian Universe are wonderful writers with awesome stories to tell. I would love to see all of them write a book without profanity. For now however I think I will see if some of my old favorites are on audible so I can clean out my ears.

Like the new direction

When the stories were from the school, it was cool how it was based around the group of students. even with the occasional character loss (a.k.a. Izzy). Now.with the story focusing on Alison, I was worried it would lack depth. But, I can happily say otherwise. Hannah is a great addition with her road to redemption from a con artist. I look forward to the next step in Alison's evolution. the only thing I don't like is her losing her soul sight. But, life is boring without change and I can accept it.
