About this listen

The beloved author returns with a remarkable novel of both raw suspense and lyric beauty - the story of a lost pilot and a wartime photographer that will leave its mark on your soul.

In 1947, photographer and war correspondent Janey Everett arrives at a remote surfing village on the Hawaiian island of Kauai to research a planned biography of forgotten aviation pioneer Sam Mallory, who joined the loyalist forces in the Spanish Civil War and never returned. Obsessed with Sam’s fate, Janey has tracked down Irene Lindquist, the owner of a local island-hopping airline, whom she believes might actually be the legendary Irene Foster, Mallory’s onetime student and flying partner. Foster’s disappearance during a round-the-world flight in 1937 remains one of the world’s greatest unsolved mysteries.

At first, the flinty Mrs. Lindquist denies any connection to Foster. But Janey informs her that the wreck of Sam Mallory’s airplane has recently been discovered in a Spanish desert, and piece by piece, the details of Foster’s extraordinary life emerge: from the beginnings of her flying career in Southern California, to her complicated, passionate relationship with Mallory, to the collapse of her marriage to her aggressive career manager, the publishing scion George Morrow.

As Irene spins her tale to its searing conclusion, Janey’s past gathers its own power. The duel between the two women takes a heart-stopping turn. To whom does Mallory rightfully belong? Can we ever come to terms with the loss of those we love and the lives we might have lived?

Good!!

I listened to this on Audible (I love Cassandra Campbell as a narrator and she did a great job). I kept getting confused on the characters and well at the end, I see why. It was a really great story and the perfect wrapped up ending. Another win by Beatrix!

Liked, but did not love it

This book took me a while to understand what was going on. But because of the locations and the time periods, I hung in. Still not sure what happened at the very end with Leo. Disappointed with that. I didn’t really like any of the characters, except for maybe Leo.

Great story that ends up being told by a surprise.

great story that ends up being told by a surprise person that you don't realize from the beginning who it is at the end. this person is that who you think it is. so it's definitely a great surprise. very exciting book about this great pilot and co-pilot of the airplane that they fly throughout the war or after the war and go up and do shows and everything for flying. really great book to read I like it a lot but worth the credit to use for

What a great imagination!

Creative take on the disappearance of Amelia Earhart and a great twist at the end! I loved this and listened as well as read it Now I'm going to listen to Amelia Earhart's own book The Fun of It to see how close some of the details are. I love this book and the narration was excellent too as always from Miss Campbell. I can't wait to find out more about this amazing woman whether her story is fictionalized or an actual memoir!

Absolutely Amazing

Beatriz Williams has written yet another amazing story. The twists and turns, along with the amazing imagery put me in the story and kept my attention the entire time. I cant wait until the next book comes out! the vocal performance was equally as good, soothing even.

Good title. Caught my interest.

Slow to catch my attention then gets me with the female banter. Unfortunately I simply was too distracted by the alternative chapters. This was my first book by Beatriz. Would be willing to try another.
