About this listen

An extraordinary story inspired by the real Women's Air Raid Defense, where an unlikely recruit and her sisters-in-arms forge their place in WWII history.

Daisy Wilder prefers the company of horses to people, bare feet and salt water to high heels and society parties. Then, in the dizzying aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Daisy enlists in a top secret program, replacing male soldiers in a war zone for the first time. Under fear of imminent invasion, the WARDs guide pilots into blacked-out airstrips and track unidentified planes across Pacific skies.

But not everyone thinks the women are up to the job, and the new recruits must rise above their differences and work side by side despite the resistance and heartache they meet along the way. With America's future on the line, Daisy is determined to prove herself worthy. And with the man she's falling for out on the front lines, she cannot fail. From radar towers on remote mountaintops to flooded bomb shelters, she'll need her new team when the stakes are highest. Because the most important battles are fought—and won—together.

This inspiring and uplifting tale of pioneering, unsung heroines vividly transports the listener to wartime Hawaii, where one woman's call to duty leads her to find courage, strength and sisterhood.

Very good story

A very interesting story about life in Hawaii in the days following the attack on Pearl.

Very different woman are trained to replace men, who are needed for fighting, as filters and plotters. The US Army is determined there will be no more mistakes reading the information they are getting on the new invention radar like on the day of the attack. They picked up planes heading for Hawaii, but since they had new planes coming in from San Francisco, they didn't take them seriously.

The first time I listened to the story, I didn't give it the credit it deserves. I think i was paying too much attention to the blanket I was knitting and not enough to the story. The second time through I caught a lot about the women's life during the war. I really liked the way everyone was accepted, how they coped with war.

One was a pilot's wife, another a pilots girl friend, another was dealing with a marriage that had big problems, the main character grew into a much better woman.

There was some romance, but it was only in the background.

Hawaiian Historical Fiction

Predictable. Occasionally not plausable. A nice story with loose ends neatly tied together by ending.

This was unexpected. A delightful mix of history and fiction. I enjoyed following the lives of the radar girls. I laughed. I cried. I could feel myself there at times with the vivid descriptions of the scenery

World War II and women

I really enjoyed this book, not only because it shows what women did to support the war, but the location.
We lived in Oahu in the late 70’s, and visited many of the sites mentioned in the book. Many of the pronunciations and locales brought back such warm memories.

Talk about girl power you go girls!!!!!

That was an excellent book. I just hope those girls got all the recognition they so richly deserved. Sara Ackerman did a wonderful job of telling a truly amazing story. Cassandra Campbell did an excellent job of narrating this book. Thank you both. I look forward to more of this kind of great book.

Fabulous insight into what the real radar girls might have experienced

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It made me pause to imagine what the Greatest Generation went through in WW II. Loved the women’s friendships.

Also, the narration was very well performed!

Worth reading!

I really like the story, but very much disliked the Audible performance. If I hadn't enjoyed the story itself so much, I probably wouldn't have finished listening to it, the performance of it was that bad.
