About this listen

Florence, Italy, 1944: The city is under heavy Nazi occupation, but for 13-year-old Paolo, war is a long and boring wait. Too young to fight for the resistance, yet desperate for action and adventure, he sneaks out each night to ride his bicycle along the darkened city streets. For Paolo, the risk is thrilling.

But when he is accosted by Partisans - covert members of the anti-Nazi movement - thrilling quickly becomes dangerous as Paolo and his family are thrust into a terrifying and impossible situation. Finally at the center of the action, Paolo must figure out once and for all whether he has what it takes to truly be a hero.

The book was great. Little slow to get into but then got very exciting and kept you on your seat, wanting you to turn to the next page. You really got to bond with the characters and even made me cry towards the end.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of Sam Vance‘s voice. It was a little too slow going at normal speed, but was a little better at 1.2 to 1.4 speed. However, this did make it a little choppy at times. I appreciated his effort to change his voice for different characters speaking, but it was also kind of annoying; I think I just heard their voices sounding different in my head. I did appreciate that he was able to speak the Italian and French words that came up at times throughout the book. That was very helpful.

Great Story, Ok Audio

My 12 year old and I very much enjoyed the story. He learned a lot about that time, and the struggles of ordinary people caught up in the war.

Great Book!
