About this listen

In Hide My Eyes, Campion finds himself hunting down a serial killer. A spate of murders leaves him and his friend and colleague Inspector Luke, with only the baffling clues of a left-hand glove and a lizard-skin lettercase. However a chain of strange events leads them to an odd museum of curiosities hidden in a quiet London neighbourhood where there is more going on than meets the eye.

Disappointed, but good enough

My main disappointment is that there isn't mjuch of Campion in it. And I didn't like that it almost made a virtue of sticking with a criminal to the end.

Allingham just keeps getting better!

This time we get into the mind and habits of s serial killer, pursued by a wider circle of interested parties. Excellent and very modern, and Charles Luke really shines. My only complaint is that Lugg and Amanda don't play a part.

Not much Campion, but plenty of suspense

Once again Margery Allingham keeps me on the edge of my chair wondering how it is going to work out, scene by scene. Campion shows up a few times, but like in some of her other books, he isn't the main character.
I enjoyed it so much I am tempted to read the book over again right now, but it would be like eating too much cake, my inner greedy child says "More!" but I will read a different Campion book so as not to spoil the enjoyment from overindulgence.

Very good, not great

Would you consider the audio edition of Hide My Eyes to be better than the print version?

Have not read the print edition.

What did you like best about this story?

Her characterizations are always excellent. People are vivid, well-rounded, unusual and individualistic.

Have you listened to any of David Thorpe’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

David Thorpe is fantastic. Although most people say that Frances Matthews reads Allingham better (and he is great), David Thorpe pushes the envelope and makes each character so individualistic. He has great enthusiasm and attention to detail in his reading. People don't like the high whine he puts into Campion's voice, but that is how Allingham describes Campion's voice in Black Dudley.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I wouldn't make a film of it as, although it was good, it was kind of a pale shadow of Tiger In The Smoke.

Any additional comments?

Allingham can do no wrong.

Excellent

An unsolved murder has gotten under the skin of Detective Superintendent Charlie Luke, to the concern of both his superiors and his friend Albert Campion. When a surprise bit of evidence appears, it gives Luke the spark he needs to start another investigation, this time with the encouragement and help of Campion.

In this psychological thriller, the reader knows who the murderer is early on, and waits in agony and suspense as he prepares to kill again, all the while watching Campion and Detective Superintendent Luke play a game of "hot and cold" trying to identify him. This is one of Allingham's finest, to my mind. It's extremely well written, deeply explores some of the characters, is emotional without being sentimental, and is quite memorable. I had read it before, but was as impressed and moved as I was the first time.

(I generally advise reading these books in order, as many of the characters are recurring, but I think this one could stand alone.)

A disappointment

This book is too long and the reader has made the voices so different from previous books that nothing rings true.
