About this listen

What do you know about the history of Canada?

You might think you know a lot about Canada - especially if you happen to live in North America. But in truth, it’s surprising how little most of us know about Canadian history. Even though Canada is just across the border from the United States, Canada tends to get unfairly overshadowed. Nevertheless, Canada’s history is a vibrant one.

Recorded Canadian history begins with European contact in the 1500s, but there are plenty of rich legends and folklore passed down by Native North Americans that fill in the gaps. This audiobook follows the threads of the many civilizations that made up Canada and their ultimate merging together to forge the rich tapestry that makes up Canada today.

The history of Canada is more than first meets the eye.

In this groundbreaking treatise on Canadian history, you will discover:

  • The origins of the First Nations, the artifacts they left behind, and how they are faring today
  • The early French and English settlements and how they interacted with the First Nations
  • Canada’s participation in the world wars and the bravery of its soldiers on the battlefield
  • Canada’s role during the Cold War and how it acted as one of the first defenses against nuclear threats to North America
  • Canadian independence and how the French speakers in Quebec sought their own independence as well
  • And so much more!

our great northern neighbours

having canadian blood in me, I've often been interested in the history of Canada. little is taught in American schools--even those along the border. it was nice to learn about history, outside of interactions encountered during pre n post revolutionary America.

I was only slightly disappointed by the lack of a bit more recent history. mainly: when n how did Canada introduce/form its most recent provinces? one day I'm leaving school with the geographic knowledge of certain places. cut to a few yrs later, helping a younger sibling with homework, and surprising both me and my mother (whose own mother was canadian) with brand new areas. I think that should be included, should this book ever be amended.

jay Herbert was better, this time around, bur still had some annoying times. since this is a very recent publication, I hope this means he's been working hard at improving.

ok overview of some canadian history

As a canadian who wanted to learn more about canadian history, I didn't learn much, but it was an ok refresher of certain basics.

The narrator has a nice voice, but a weird up talking quirk that is a bit distracting.

Exactly what I was looking for…..

Being a US citizen, I just found myself wondering about the history of Canada. I really didn’t know how the country came to be. This did an absolutely perfect job explaining it all. The narrator was excellent. I highly recommend.

Overall a thorough and enjoyable history

A complete account that takes you from the earliest days right up to 2022. Unusually detailed and accurate accounts of interactions between the first French and tribal encounters. For some reason the importance of both the American Pilgrims and the French Huguenots (early protestant settlers) is omitted, but otherwise this is a balanced account. Also, the words of the United States national anthem were written during the war of 1812, not the American revolution. But these are small points. I enjoyed this book.

careless preparation marred the performance

a short history of Canada that helped ease my ignorance about our good neighbor to the north. it packed a good narrative into a very short book.

the drawback was Jay Herbert's reading, but he's not a bad narrator. he just had no idea how to pronounce French names and words, and that is a fatal flaw in a history of Canada. either a producer, or director, or the narrator himself should have prepped the pronunciation of every name and every foreign word. the absolute neglect of this made this audio presentation far less valuable and enjoyable than it should have been.

An essential read

As a new Canadian resident I found this very insightful as I was on the hunt for knowledge about this land. I love the progression of the story from thee Iva age to present day Canada. Also the tone of the reader was excellent. Clear and AUDIBLE.

A BRIEF history...

folksy and definitely liberal as well as Anti-American leaves a lot out. The reader is very Canadian if there is such a thing. The world view is very one sided and omits any Canadian shortcoming. Still, it shows an interesting presentation of pre-19th Century Canada.

Sloppily written with poor narration

This book reads like a college freshman's term paper -- a meandering narrative glued together by vapid prose pumped full of clichés. The narrator is the worst I've encountered among dozens and dozens of Audible performances. Will never again buy one of these "Captivating" histories.

Extremely annoying narration

Extremely annoying narration packed with clownish intonations that have no connection to the text. That is how you would read a quantum physics book to entertain a toddler who has no interest or ability in understanding the actual material. If I listened to a sample of this, I would have never purchased this title. The narrator should be ashamed of himself.
