About this listen
Have you ever had your entire future riding on a single moment?
It’s the day of the high school softball team tryouts and freshman, Cam Dixon, couldn’t be more nervous. Ever since she was 6 years old, softball has been her life. But when a group of teenage boys decide to show up and heckle her, Cam will have to face her internal demons head-on. Doubt and anger make poor teammates when your dream is on the line. Will she choke right when it matters most or will she knock it out of the park?

Story
Twelve-year-old Danny Walker may be the smallest kid on the basketball court, but don't tell him that. Because no one plays with more heart or court sense. But none of that matters when he is cut from his local travel team, the very same team his father led to national prominence as a boy. Danny's father knows Danny isn't the only kid who was cut for the wrong reason, and together, this washed-up former player and a bunch of never-say-die kids prove that the heart simply cannot be measured.

When you don't talk, there's a lot of stuff that ends up not getting said. Stuff like why her best friend, Amber, isn't so friendly anymore. Or why her little brother, Curtis, never opens his mouth. Why her mom has two jobs and a big secret. Why her college-football-star brothers won't even call home. Why her dad would go ballistic if she tried out for the high school football team herself.

In 1940, at just 15 years old, small-town baseball star Gene Moore was signed to the Brooklyn Dodgers, who saw in him the potential to become one of the great catchers of all time. Before that could happen, though, WWII intervened. Gene's story, a surprising paean to the power and humanity of a game, is told here by his son, a first-time author who exhibits the confidence and pacing of a pro.

I needed you. I needed you to tell me I was beautiful. I needed you to tell me it was all going to be okay. I needed you to be with me. To love me. To protect me. I needed you - but the sad thing is you didn't need me. You didn't want me. You never cared about me. And when you gave up on me, I gave up on me, too. I lost myself because I found all my self-worth in you. And when you left me, I left myself, too. Now I'm left wondering, could I come back for me?

Meet Will Carter, but feel free to call him Carter. (Yes, he knows it's a lazy nickname, but he didn't have much say in the matter.) He has a stuttering problem, particularly around boobs and belly buttons. He battles Attention Deficit Disorder every minute of every day...unless he gets distracted. He's a virgin, mostly because he's no good at talking to girls.

Anthony Robles is a three-time all-American wrestler, the 2011 NCAA National Wrestling Champion, and a Nike-sponsored athlete. He was also born without his right leg. Doctors could not explain to his mother, Judy, what led to the birth defect, but at the age of five, the one-legged toddler scaled a fifty-foot pole unassisted. From that moment on, Judy knew without a doubt that her son would be unstoppable.

Fun for softball girls
Over all I liked this, It was nice to see the insecurities of her and then how she grew confidence by the end. My only complaint is that her sportsmanship towards the other girls on the team wasn't very good an maybe that could have also been a learning moment for her too. But this was a good fun listen and captured just how fierce softball girls can be

Does she have the confidence
This is the second book I’ve read/listened to by this author and I would listen to another. This book contains a “lesson”- maybe a little more physical of I lesson at the end than I’d prefer, but it suits the book. It’s Cam’s hope she’ll make the high school softball team, and she needs to show the coach what she can do, despite distractions.
This is the first book I’ve listened to by this narrator ( Cortney Lee Colvin ) and I would listen to another. Her teen voices were great. She brought Cam to life in my head and sounded just like I imagined Cam would be.
There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence or swearing. This is a great book about confidence.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and voluntarily left this unbiased review.
