Publisher's summary

The gripping sight of four burly policemen manhandling a bath down the front path of a respectable villa isn't one the residents of Flaxborough see every day.

Net curtains twitch furiously, and neighbours have observations to make to Chief Inspector Purbright and Sergeant Love about the inhabitants of 14, Beatrice Avenue. Nice Gordon Periam, the mild-mannered tobacconist, and his rather less nice (in fact a bit of a bounder) lodger Brian Hopjoy had apparently shared the house amicably.

But now neither man is to be found, and something very disagreeable seems to be lurking in the drains....

Then a couple of government spooks turn up, one with an eye for the ladies - the drama is acquiring overtones of a Bond movie!

Witty and a little wicked, Colin Watson's tales offer a mordantly entertaining cast of characters and laugh-out-loud wordplay.

OK

I haven't yet made up my mind about this story. I don't think it is up to the same standards as "A Bump in the Night" and "One Coffin, Scarcely Used." I do like this series.

Above average and witty mysteries

Such fine writing with very entertaining stories make CW a real treasure. Just sorry there are only three of these titles available here. Writing thru the latter decades of the last century this author carries the tradition of truly entertaining and non-formulaic British mystery novels. Aside from the very interesting and well drawn characters and the equally interesting and original plots the language is a real pleasure to hear and easily worth several listens. Does any contemporary author provide the same intelligent entertainment? Highly recommended.

Managed to be slow and boring yet complicated

The plot was difficult to follow. The forensics were somewhat unintelligible at times. I kept having to rewind because I couldn’t stay engaged enough to follow the plot. It wasn’t due to the reader, who was fine.
