About this listen

A half-woman, half-cockroach fused in a bizarre gardening accident? That would be Mrs Jittery Twitch, dwelling in the shadows of our misdeeds. If in danger, you can call upon her help...all she asks is your soul as payment. But she’s just a legend, so no need to worry.

Barry Harris is a 28-year-old man, still living with his dear old mum in a little flat above a hairdresser. His obsession with Star Trek and the martial arts won’t help him when he’s forced out on a date.

And nobody knows about the weird string of events that’s about to put everyone’s lives in danger. A trio of samurai warriors and the strangest offer of help lead Barry on a perilous mission to save the day.

An absolute crazy and welcoming ride

I received this book from the author for an honest review.

Wao, let's begin with I haven't read the first one but this one was so cool, it was super funny and it engaged me right away.

A thing that caught my attention was that he wasn't scared of anything, he wrote like he was telling someone a story it felt pretty close actually I liked that the most.

The narrator was crazy, Love it, I dunno how I will like the first book knowing he isn't the one to read it, I do hope that if there's more of this book he will stay with James.

I know want to read the first one, for me this one was a good change of pace and it was so intense and light at the same time, just hear it, it was awesome.

Loved the footnotes on the chapters, made me laugh a lot.

Very like Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but...

Well, this was not for me. I love Hitchhiker's Guide, from the original radio series, to the books, to television, to film. Each version is different, and I like all of them on their own merits. And this book was very clearly going for a Hitchhiker's vibe, and the story almost worked for me, but the humor went more crass than I enjoy. (For the record, I didn't actually learn the title until after I was offered a review copy of the audiobook.) To be clear, my threshold for that sort of thing is towards the priggish side. Gags about boobs just make me find a story juvenile, but if you're a fan of Hitchhiker's Guide and don't have similar sensibilities, I'd genuinely recommend you give this a shot.

As alluded to above, I was given a free copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving this review.

A bit convoluted for my taste

I didn't realize this was the second in the series. The author offered to give me the first one free if I sent him a link to this review.
I normally like British humor, this story kind of reminded me of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It's twisted and there's a lot going on. I wanted to like this book much more than I did and maybe if I had listened to the first book I might have liked it more.

If you like a twisted sense of humor this book just might be for you but if you like an easy to follow plot and a fun story that doesn't involve people getting sliced in half, this might be one you want to skip.

Twisted Tale for an Open Mind

This may be book two of the series but I found it highly entertaining. Nicky Blue definitely has a twisted sense of humor. I loved this listen. It does have quite a bit going on but I followed it all just fine. The footnotes were just as entertaining as the rest of the story. As a few other reviewers said, this does have a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy feel to it but more twisted. Well done Mr. Blue, well done. The narration was excellently done. James Head really brought the story to life. He gave the characters their own voices and emotions. I was impressed with his ability to keep his voice steady (a.k.a. not cracking up) throughout the tale. A wonderful combination that I thoroughly enjoyed and will recommend to my friends.

Hot Love Inferno

Can Barry save the day? A bizarre string of events are set in motion and it’s up to Barry to set things to right.

Nicky Blue has a bit of a warped sense of humor, and there’s nothing wrong with that!

Overall the narration by James Head was well done. My one complaint would be the different volume levels throughout... I love how the footnotes were brought out, but the volume was a little to low... I had to regularly readjust my volume to comfortably listen.

Not for me

I tried a couple of times to listen to this but was unable to listen for more than 10 minutes before I had to turn it off. There were a couple cheap laughs but it was just too ridiculous for me. The narration was ok but the story was not something I could listen to. I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator.

Another hilarious book by Nicky Blue

Another hilarious dark comedy from the Prophecy Allocation Series, although it can be read as a stand-alone book. I loved this one as much as “Escape from Samsara.” Like the first book, it is dark British comedy, so be prepared for some British English. But in this one, the author explains the terminology in footnotes, which are quite funny. My only complaint is that in the audiobook, the audio level goes down to differentiate the footnotes, which means you need to adjust the volume constantly to hear the audiobook.

Barry Harris is back, and while he’s still a ninja fighting off enemies, this time he’s entered the dating world. Barry hasn’t been on a date since he was a teenager, but what do you expect from an adult man living with his mom watching star trek and pretending to be a ninja? His mom sets him up on a date with a friends’ daughter, Joanna, who is then abducted, and Barry goes out to find her.

With a little help from his ninja skills, talking philosophical basset hound, and a half-human half-cockroach, he finds his way to fight off the kidnappers and irritable bowel syndrome.

Not only is this filled with wacky, nonsensical, absurd shenanigans, but there is mystery about who the narrator is. I won’t tell you who it is, but when you find out, you’re going to say to yourself, “of course it was, why didn’t I see that coming?”

This book isn’t about deep character development or making a statement on the world we live in today. It’s about laughing your butt off. It is an original work – defiantly not forming to a cookie-cutter genre convention.
