About this listen

A haunting, edge-of-your-seat debut psychological thriller about a woman who has been institutionalized for a heinous crime, and the psychiatrist assigned to her case who must uncover the truth beneath the madness.

How close do you get before it’s too late...?

Working as a dedicated forensic psychiatrist for many years, Emma is not shocked so easily. Then she is assigned to work with Connie, a wife and mother accused of a despicable crime. Connie is suffering from dissociative amnesia - or at least seems to be.

Now it is up to Emma to decide whether Connie can stand trial for her sins. But there is something about Connie that inexorably pulls Emma into her orbit. Perhaps it is the way she seems to see right through Emma, speaking to Emma’s deepest insecurities about her life, marriage, and her own tragic past. And soon Emma begins to understand how Connie’s complicated marriage and toxic relationship with her beautiful best friend Ness could have driven Connie to snap - or maybe, she is simply getting too close to a woman who is unforgivable…

Alternating between the two women’s points of view, before and after Connie’s breakdown, Too Close is a masterfully written riveting listen about the powerful - yet dangerous - closeness between women.

Interesting...but not for me

When I purchased as an Audible Daily Deal the genre was shown as "psychological thriller". Now it is "Women's Fiction" which may or may not be valid. Whatever the genre it is not for me although I did listen to the entire train wreck of a novel. The narration is so good that I uprated the novel.

Crazy and good

I got this book because of what people said about how good this book was for them. At first I found it tedious at times and had some trouble following who was who, but as it got closer to the end I didn't want it to end. I was even thinking about returning it but I held on and I'm glad that I did.

Don’t miss this one!

At first I wasn’t sure... it starts out
heavy... but then I could not stop listening-
this story is so well written and the blunt
descriptions of life will have you laughing
till your face hurts . The narration is
great and the story is riveting. Kat

EXCEPTIONAL!!

A wonderful portrait of modern life, expectations and how complicated we can make something so invariably simple - LIFE. Also a realistic look into mental illness , factors that can trigger those predisposed and serious long term effects of psychotropic drugs.

Not a Thriller

If read with no expectations, the book is an oddly satisfying story. Well written and with finely drawn characters, the novel was an interesting idea about the nature of marriage, relationships, friendships and forgiveness.

The behavior of the psychiatrist was deeply disturbing and totally unprofessional. In context of the story, it made sense but seemed unrealistic at best. There is nothing to be gained by effectively demonizing the behavior of a therapist in pursuit of a plot.

Flawed and imperfect but strangely compelling seems a good description.

heart wrenching, engrossing story

This story is relevant now more than ever. Following one woman's path into madness, it captured my attention, and even though there was never any question as to who did it, I kept hoping there would be a different outcome because I came to have sympathy for the main character. I loved her therapist, who was an excellent clinician but also portrayed as a human being. Her growing attachment to her client, who most view as a villain, is something that happens from time to time in the helping professions. Emotionally insightful, helped in no small part by the excellent narration! highly recommend!

Pretty good

a character study. unlike some books there really was news at the climax of this story. but it was over shadowed by the result of the news. I was confused about the condition of two characters toward the end, not sure if I missed something or if it was truly anti climatic. glad there was a more complete resolution in the epilogue.

Amazing!!

Fast-paced, witty, surprising. The narration of Connie is the best I've heard. Now off to find more books by this author.
