About this listen

The number-one New York Times best-selling author of Airport reveals the inner workings of a New Orleans hotel - and the human drama unfolding behind its closed doors.

During five sultry days, the lives of the guests, the management, and the workers at New Orleans's largest and most elite hotel converge. The owner has four days to raise the money to save his financially ailing property. The general manager, once blacklisted from the hospitality business, struggles with one crisis after another. A rebellious heiress will do anything to attain her secret desires. The duke and the duchess in the lavish presidential suite are covering up a crime. And within one of the many guest rooms hides a professional thief.

Filled with memorable characters and authentic detail about the inner machinery and secrets of a five-star hotel, this gripping New York Times best seller sold millions of copies and was adapted for both film and TV. Set in a time when travel was still glamorous and grand independent hotels set the standard for luxury, it's like a vacation in itself, from the author of such behind-the-scenes blockbusters as The Moneychangers and Wheels.

Awesome!

I read this book when it originally came out. I loved it then, and after reading it again recently, I still love it. I think it holds up very well. The only things that are different now (and the author mentions these things in a foreward) is that African-Americans are called negroes; and there's a lot of smoking cigarettes going on. Otherwise, it reads as if it could have been written this year.

just as enjoyable as it was when i first read it

still a fascinating look at the behind the scenes running of a large hotel...with some parts that would be edited out today regarding segregation and the place of afroamericains in the deep south. to be read in the context of the time when it was written

Enjoyed the story very much, but not the narrator

If not for the story, I would have given up before the second chapter. The narrator did several voices well, and there was easy distinction between characters. His cadence, however, was a combination of politician, newscaster, and Rod Serling. Very distracting and annoying.

This is one of the most underated books i've read.

This is one of the most underated books i've read. Its really a mystery, a detective novel, wrapped up in regular life with a few great main characters. Enjoy it if you stick with it.

Hotel by Arthur Hailey

Great book, very entertaining,

Arthur Hailey is a master in the Arts of keeping on top of his multiple plot lines, "massaging" them into cohesiveness, and leading all of the strands to a satisfying and happy ending.

I enjoyed the book a lot, but I did not care much about the narrator.

An old favorite

I’ve been waiting for this book to come to Audible for years and was so excited to see it offered. The story still holds up, even all these years later, and the multiple subplots that somehow weave together are complex and fascinating to watch coalesce.

I feel that Hotel (basic plot discussed in other reviews) is Arthur Hailey’s masterpiece. As much as I enjoy Airport, I find this one superior.

My only downer about this book was the narrator. He was adequate, but monotone and I only because I know the plots and characters could I tell who was talking sometimes.

All in all, definitely worth listening to - and don’t judge by the twenty-first century!

A Classic. Some of us remember when.

Hailey not only crafts an intricate and suspenseful story, he takes you into the inner workings of whatever institution he's writing about (e.g. hotel). Though most of his books are dated, you still receive a detailed understanding of the parts that make the institution flourish.

I have loved these stories since they were written and am delighted that Audible is making them available! Please continue to bring these older gems to a new audience.

Outstanding

I am abashed to admit this was the first Arthur’s Hailey novel I have read. I can say it will not be the last. This book was wonderful and delightfully written. Thank you Mr. Hailey.
