About this listen
Innocence dies so easily. Evil lives again...and again...and again.
One hundred years ago in Port Arbello a pretty little girl began to scream. And struggle. And die. No one heard. No one saw. Just one man whose guilty heart burst in pain as he dashed himself to death in the sea.
Now something peculiar is happening in Port Arbello. The children are disappearing, one by one. An evil history is repeating itself. And one strange, terrified child has ended her silence with a scream that began 100 years ago.

Story
Lush and deceptively tranquil, with its pristine beaches and blossoming vegetation, the island basks in splendid isolation off the South Carolina coast. Here, where sudden storms unleash the murderous rage of wind and sea, stands the Devereaux mansion, a once-great plantation house now crumbling amid ancient oaks dripping with Spanish moss. Here, Marguerite Devereaux, 50 and childless, has cast off her dreams to care for her aged, demanding mother.

Story
Brilliant summers amid golden fields. Killing winters of razorlike cold. A peaceful, neighborly village, darkened by legends of death? Who is Nathaniel? For 100 years, the people of Prairie Bend have whispered the name in wonder and fear. Some say he is simply a folk tale - a legend created to frighten children on cold winter nights. Some swear he is a terrifying spirit returned to avenge the past. And soon...very soon...some will come to believe that Nathaniel lives still - darkly, horrifyingly real. Nathaniel.

His childhood remains a riddled wasteland of abuse by a sadistic father and abandonment by an apathetic mother. In turn his only refuge became his writing. When Lance loses his ability to write and becomes haunted by a nightmare that he'd thought was buried, he is drawn inexplicably to a house on the shores of Lake Superior, where he finds his muse once again - but something is waiting for him when he arrives.

Suffer the Children presents a terrifying tale of apocalyptic fiction, as listeners are introduced to Herod's Syndrome, a devastating illness that suddenly and swiftly kills all young children across the globe. Soon, they return from the grave, and ask for blood. And with blood, they stop being dead. They continue to remain the children they once were, but only for a short time, as they need more blood to live. The average human body holds 10 pints of blood, so the inevitable question for parents everywhere becomes: How far would you go to bring your child back?

Take it from west to east, and you might find seven. But you'd better hope not. Titus and Melanie Bell leave their hotel in Fargo for a second honeymoon canoeing the Okefenokee Swamp. But shortly before they reach their destination, they draw up to a halt at the edge of a rickety bridge with old stone pilings, with room for only one car....

The whodunnit mystery.
The story was interesting and kept me involved. My only real complaint seems to be a typical problem in entertainment these days: unsatisfying snd/or unresolved endings, or the bad guys or entity wins. if I want real life endings, I can just watch the news. There are no heroes or any hope in these books or shows. Just one women's opinion here.

Captivating
Captivating however the ending I did not like it was rushed and I would have liked a different ending to tie up the beginning and middle

classic John Saul
I read this book when it was released in hardcover in 1977. I enjoyed listening to the audio book, the narration was excellent. Old family curses and hauntings never make for a happy ending. This story, not surprisingly, ended in a bit of a cliffhanger. It was entertaining, though. The characters were well developed by the author, and the narrator brought them to life. Good story.

Macabre and fascinating
Okay… so I just finished. This boom as filled with all sorts of twists and turns and was actually broken up into 3 parts- 100 years ago, like 50 years in the future and the present. Throughout the book, you are eluded to some tremendous violence and a legend that plagues the Conger family but it isn’t until the end of the book, the present that the pieces fall into place. My little brother had this book and I noticed it was as available on Audible plus so I gave it a listen and read along. Full disclaimer, cats and kids are killed so if you’re not able to stomach that sort of content, this book is not for you. I wanted to read a spooky book for October and even though my thought are still racing, I’m glad I saw this book through. The narration was very good and you can really feel the terror that this book was emoting. I gave this book 5 stars because I couldn’t put it down. I had to see what happened over 100 years of content. It is highly disturbing but I highly recommend.

More on Sarah and Elizabeth
I wish that he could have expanded more on what Sarah remembered with more in depth with that, and how that would have played out with her and Elizabeth.

Narration is amazing and this is a gripping story
Paul Woodson did a fantastic job with his narration! I loved it! The voice that he used for each character was right on point. The story was also engaging, and creepy. I would definitely recommend.

unsatisfying ending
... but typical for the genre. All in all, it's a good quick read. John Saul is, as always, an excellent wordsmith.

Loved it!
This is the second time for me with the story I read the book in four hours back in the 80s and John. Saul automatically became my favorite author. I listen to audible while traveling in the car and the story at me gripping the steering wheel I plan on listening to the rest of his stories on audible, which I have also already read.

I read this book Years It is John Saul's Best book
This is John Saul's best book ever he wrote. I never forgoten reading it many years ago. This book destroy all books by Steven King, even Steven used John's Title for a poor uninteresting knock-off poorly written. John Saul,s Supper the Children is Powerful and Destroy the plagiarism of Steven King and the other plagiarized Suffer - the - Children books.
